Suicide attempts are characterized as intentional attitudes of self-harm in which there was an intention to kill, but which did not lead to death. The way the person who has attempted suicide is assisted for during hospitalization is an important resource that influences treatment continuity after being discharged from health service. This research aimed to investigate how individuals who have attempted suicide are assisted by the mental health team in a general hospital. For this, a qualitative descriptive research was developed at Mental Health Inpatient Unit of the Hospital de Clínicas de Uberlândia (UISM - HCU). Eight health professionals participated this research responding to an online form, and of this total, five participated in a second stage that consisted of conducting an interview with a semi-structured script. The qualitative Epistemology proposed by González Rey was chosen to conduct and analyze the data collected from the questionnaire and interview. Different weaknesses were identified in the service offered to individuals who attempt suicide, including actions focused on biomedical aspects, lack of specific care, presence of stigmas and a phenomenon called “revolving door”. It was also observed that professionals are affected in different ways in the context of their work. The results signaled the needing of offer dialogue spaces, Permanent Education and psychosocial care for professionals who work with suicide attempts situations, which must be provided by the institution they work.
