Resumo: The contribution of masonry walls to increase the stiffness of infilled frames under lateral loading has been verified over the last decades by several authors around the world. However, despite the known benefits of the interaction between the infill masonry and the surrounding frame, this structural system is still barely applied in a practical way, due to the complexity of the behavior of infilled frames and the lack of analytical models that possess the necessary simplicity and the required accuracy to be used in everyday engineering practice. In this context, the present work aims to contribute to the development of numerical analysis of buildings with participating masonry, presenting the influence of considering masonry as a material with orthotropic behavior and proposing a procedure for the elaboration of equivalent multi-strut models for the consideration of participating masonry. Several reinforced concrete frames infilled with participating masonry were simulated, under lateral loads, modeled using the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Equivalent Strut Models (ESM). In relation to masonry orthotropy, it was found that the consideration of masonry as a material with orthotropic behavior can significantly impact the results of numerical models. Regarding the multi-strut models developed in this work, these consist in models with two and three equivalent struts, in which the eccentricities of the struts are calculated from the equivalent strut width of the classic single-strut model. The influence of the consideration of Mainstone (1974) and Durrani and Luo (1994) expressions and the procedure of the brazilian code ABNT NBR 16868-1 (2020) for the calculation of the equivalent width were investigated, as well as the influence of the stiffness of the masonry on the quality of the results provided by the developed models, comparing with reference results obtained with the FEM. It was concluded that, for the infilled frames analyzed, the multi-strut models provided more satisfactory results than the classic single-strut model for the obtainment of lateral displacements and internal forces in the frame elements. Also notable that the stiffness of the participating masonry influenced the results, since the developed models provided closer values to the reference for masonry with lower stiffness.
