Resumo: The objective of this research was to understand how primary teachers, who worked at Grupo Escolar Júlio Bueno Bandão in the city of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, during the historic period of 1930 - 1950 appropriated the republican ideals of educating the brazilian people within the principles of civilizing, of moralize and sanitize, to win modernity, civility and progress. This research was setted in the field of oral thematic history as a methodological nature of historiography, applied to study the lives of persons, groups or communities. In this sense, from specific themes and pre-establiched evidence of through a event the narratives those who witnessed or lived. The analysis of narratives four teachers, the documents found in the Grupo Escolar Júlio Bueno Brandão and the Arquivo Público Municipal and bibliographic references were important sources in order to the understand how the teachers took in the meaning of education, school, teacher and issues related to civism, morals, discipline, hygiene and health proclaimed at the time. After research, understood that the teachers throughout their lives, were formed as teachers republican, from their experiences of personal, family and professional. They took for themselves the principles and values espoused by the republican ideals, which have produced a way of being, thinking, feeling and acting themselves. So appropriated and put into practice the republican ideals of civilizing, moralize and sanitize. The results revealed the necessity of a formation that enlarges the capacity of thinking, of arguing were inserted of the educational, social, political and economical processes.

The results revealed the necessity of a formation that enlarges the capacity of thinking, of arguing were inserted of the educational, social, political and economical processes.O objetivo desta pesquisa foi compreender como as professoras primárias que atuaram no Grupo Escolar Júlio Bueno Brandão, do município de Uberlândia-MG, no período de 1930 a 1950, apropriaram-se dos ideais republicanos de formar o povo brasileiro de acordo com os princípios de civilizar, de moralizar e de higienizar, para conquistar a modernidade, a civilidade e o progresso. Esta pesquisa situa-se no campo da história oral temática como um recurso metodológico de natureza historiográfica, aplicado para se estudar a vida de pessoas, grupos ou comunidades. Nesse sentido, a partir de temas específicos e preestabelecidos, busca evidenciar um acontecimento pela narrativa de quem o presenciou ou viveu. A análise das narrativas de quatro professoras primárias, dos documentos encontrados no Grupo Escolar Júlio Bueno Brandão e no Arquivo Público Municipal e das referências bibliográficas sobre o assunto foi importante para entender como as professoras tomaram para si o significado de educação, de escola, de professor e das questões relacionadas ao civismo, à moral, à disciplina, à higiene e à saúde, proclamados na época. Após a pesquisa compreendeu-se que as professoras, ao longo de suas vidas, foram se constituindo como professoras republicanas, a partir de suas experiências de vida pessoal, familiar e profissional. Tomaram para si os princípios e os valores defendidos pelos ideais republicanos, os quais produziram um modo de ser, pensar, sentir e agir próprios. Assim apropriaram-se e colocaram em prática os ideais republicanos de civilizar, moralizar e higienizar.
