Resumo: Objective: To identify the risk factors that lead to the abandonment of treatment of people living with HIV / AIDS. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study that was developed in a specialized outpatient clinic for the treatment of HIV / AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and Sexually Transmitted Infections. A sample of 120 randomly selected medical records was considered, being 60 medical records of patients in abandonment and 60 medical records of patients adhering to treatment. Results: There was a predominance in the sample of heterosexual men aged between 20 and 39 years. Individuals who abandoned treatment had a higher frequency than expected for individuals younger than 40 years and higher frequency observed for former drug users and for tattooing. Conclusion: The identification of risk factors related to treatment abandonment of people living with HIV / AIDS, such as those described in this study, can contribute to improve care for these people by identifying early abandonment.

Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo observacional transversal que foi desenvolvido em um Ambulatório Especializado para tratamento de HIV/Aids, Hepatites Virais e Infecções Sexualmente Transmissíveis. Considerou-se uma amostra de 120 prontuários selecionados aleatoriamente, sendo 60 prontuários de pacientes em abandono e 60 prontuários de pacientes em adesão ao tratamento. Resultados: Na amostra estudada observou-se predominância de homens heterossexuais com idade entre 20 e 39 anos. No grupo, que abandonaram o tratamento apresentaram frequência observada maior que o esperado para indivíduos em menor de 40 anos e maior frequência observada para ex-usuários de drogas e para quem tinha tatuagem.
