Resumo: Placenta retention is characterized by failure to expel fetal attachments after delivery, a condition that affects animals in the transition period and impacts the reproductive efficiency of dairy cattle and consequently the economic result of dairy activity. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether Girolando cows that had retained placenta in the first calving are more likely to recur this pathology in subsequent calving. Data from the first and second calves and the occurrence of placenta retention of 185 animals from a commercial dairy farm located in the municipality of Conquista, Minas Gerais, from 2014 to 2020, were colletected. The herd consisted of 400 lactating, crossbred cows of the Gir and Holstein breeds, maintained in a compost barn management system, with an average production of 13.200 liters of milk per day, with an age at first birth of 27.6 months and an 18.1% incidence of placenta retention during the period evaluated. No differences were found in the incidence of placenta retention at second calving for cows that had placenta retention at the first calving. Of the cows evaluated, 87.57% did not have placenta retention in the first calving, of these 83.33% also did not have placenta retention in the second calving, while 16.67% developed placenta retention in the second calving. Of the 12.43% of cows affected by placenta retention in the first calving, in the second calf 82.61% had no placenta retention while 17.38% were affected by placenta retention. It is concluded that in crossbreed dairy cows the occurrence of placenta retention in this first calving, does not increase the chances of its recurrence in the second calving.
