Resumo: Tailings dams are used to store waste materials from mining activities. Due to the lack of natural resources, high construction costs, and safety concerns, geosynthetic materials are used for various functions, including drainage, filtration, protection, reinforcement, separation, waterproofing, and erosion control. This study aims to analyze the current landscape of geosynthetic applications in tailings dams, addressing practices already implemented in the country, their potential uses, advantages, disadvantages, and evaluating their utilization in problem-solving and prevention. Through a literature review, various applications of geosynthetics in tailings dams were analyzed, such as the use of geotubes and geogrids for soil reinforcement, the utilization of geomembranes and geotextiles for drainage filters in iron ore tailings, among others. Based on the research, it is evident that there are several alternatives for the application of geosynthetics in dam construction, offering benefits for quality control and project optimization.

Por razão de falta de recursos naturais, alto valor de construção e segurança, materiais geossintéticos são utilizados para diversas funções, sendo elas drenagem, filtração, proteção, reforço, separação, impermeabilização e controle de erosão. Este trabalho visa analisar o panorama atual de aplicação de geossintéticos em barragens de rejeitos, visando abordar práticas já realizadas no país, o potencial de utilização, suas vantagens e desvantagens, e avaliar a utilização dos mesmos nas soluções e prevenções de problemas. A partir de uma consulta bibliográfica, procurou-se analisar algumas aplicações de geossintéticos em barragens de rejeitos, como a utilização de geotubos e geogrelha para reforço de solo, uso de geomembrana e geotêxtil para filtros drenantes em rejeitos de minério de ferro, entre outros.
