Resumo: OBJECTIVE: the purpose of this study, conducted at the Dental Hospital of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Federal University of Uberlandia-MG/Brazil, was to evaluate the lingual frenulum of babies and its relationship with body weight gain with or without performing the lingual frenectomy. METHODS: this study included 55 infants, with mean age of 58 days, with difficulties in breastfeeding, who were evaluated for ankyloglossia through the application of a protocols by two calibrated examiners. The baby's birth weight, age, sex, type of breastfeeding were collected. The body weigh variable was evaluated according to the daily weight gain (grams/day) of infants who were exclusively breastfeeding (AME in Portuguese) and those who were breastfeeding but also receiving supplementing formula (AMC in Portuguese). This variable was calculated using the birth weight and the baby’s weight at the time of the first consultation and then, using the baby’s weight at the time of the first and the second consultation, by means of sequential weighing. RESULTS: the sample consisted of 33 (60%) male infants and 22 (30%) female infants. In male babies, there was a predominance of AMC (63.60%), whereas in females, EBF had a higher prevalence (90.90%). The group with the most diagnoses of ankyloglossia and who underwent the lingual frenotomy procedure was the male, with 15 (45,45%) babies. In assessing weight gain between birth weight and the first consultation and then between the first and the second consultation in patients who had or not the frenectomy, no statistically significant differences were found: w= 0,6655 and w= 0,1379, respectively. Regarding the infants who had the frenectomy and the ones who did not undergo the same procedure, it was observed that their body weight gain was within the expected range, 35,01g and 35,95g, respectively. Regarding the measures of the values of the weights collected at birth, in the first and second visits, a statistically significant difference was verified between all variables analyzed, with the weight of the second consultation always higher. CONCLUSION: It was possible to conclude that the daily weight gain of the infants was satisfactory, reaching the expected average weight gain.
