Resumo: Utilization of agro-industrial waste has been investigated in the context of global efforts to promote sustainable alternatives for waste management. Biomass is an abundant, renewable and inexpensive energy source, making it a good alternative for diversifying the world's energy matrix. Brazil has great potential for the development of technologies for the generation of energy from biomass, mainly from agro-industrial waste, such as soybean, corn, rice, brewery tailings, forest biomass, etc. Malt bagasse, the main solid waste of the brewing industry, is destined for animal feed or disposed of in landfills. Seeking a nobler end to this residue, studies involving the thermochemical conversion of this material were performed in the house. A pyrolysis unit in a fixed bed reactor was designed and installed at the Federal University of Uberlândia’s Particulate Systems Laboratory. This course project aimed to evaluate the effect of the rate of warming of the reaction medium and the grain size of malt bagasse on the yield of pyrolytic products and their characteristics. For the grain size and heat rate ranges used in this work, the bio-oil yield was high at high heat rates and average grain size, while the carbon yield was maximized for heat rates below 30 ° C/ min and high particle size. In addition, in situ catalytic pyrolysis was studied for the maximum yield of bio-oil, being used as catalysts zeolite ZSM-5 (acid catalyst) and hydrocalumite (basic catalyst). It was found that both catalysts increased the bio-oil yield (ZSM-5 = 59% and hydrocalumite = 55.7%) while the composition of the generated bio-oil obtained different results, given that the zeolite reduced in greater amount. the oxygenate content of the bio-oil while hydrocalumite increased the furfural content of the liquid product.
