Resumo: | Bacterial resistance to antimicrobials (AMR) is considered a threat to public health worldwide, and in this context, essential oils from plants prove to be a promising and sustainable alternative to face this emergency. S. Heidelberg is a serovar often involved in serious human infections, it has invasive characteristics and multidrug resistance to antimicrobials. This study used the disk diffusion test to evaluate the inhibitory potential of nanostructured lipid carriers (CLN) from essential oils of oregano and cinnamon against 28 strains of S. Heidelberg isolated from different sources. To compare the inhibitory effect, 0.8% peracetic acid (APA) was tested in parallel. There was variation (p<0.0001, one way ANOVA) in the size of the zones of inhibition for the three agents CLN of oregano and cinnamon and 0.8% peracetic acid among the different strains analyzed, demonstrating that this characteristic is strain dependent. The 0.8% APA showed mean inhibition halos ranging from 31 to 41mm, the cinnamon CLN medium inhibition halos ranging from 14 to 43mm and the oregano CLN, mean inhibition diameter ranging from 7 to 10.5mm. The comparison between the inhibitory power of the three compounds showed that APA 0.8% was the most effective followed by cinnamon CLN and oregano CLN (p<0.0001, one way ANOVA). Despite the lower inhibitory power, essential oil CLN should be further investigated as they are a more sustainable and natural alternative to the use of traditional antimicrobials. |
