Resumo: The objective of this work is to investigate the adoption of Bitcoin as legal currency by El Salvador on September 7, 2021. The country in question presented the promotion of economic development as a justification for this act. Therefore, it is worth pointing out the possible positive and negative economic effects that the adoption of Bitcoin as the official currency can have on the Salvadoran economy. The analysis of several reports and databases from international institutions about Bitcoin, the economy of El Salvador and the adoption of this cryptocurrency in the country led to the conclusion that, since the adoption of Bitcoin in the country is still relatively recent, few people use it. , both the negative and beneficial effects of this cryptocurrency on the economy have yet to materialize.
