Resumo: The twofold aim of this work was to survey the physical environment of the municipal district of Araxá MG, using geoprocessing techniques, and to evaluate the evolution occurred in land use in two different periods: 1985 and 2005. Araxá is located in the Alto Paranaíba Macrorregion in Minas Gerais State, between the geographic co-ordinates 19º25 53 - 19°50 09 South latitude and Greenwich 46°44 27 - 47°13 38 West longitude. With an area of 1,166.96km2 and 367km from the capital of Minas Gerais, the city had a population of 78,997 inhabitants in 2000. In order to carry out this work, topographic charts, geomorphologic mapping and 1985 TM/Landsat 5 and 2005 CCD/CBERS satellite images were used. The survey of the physical environment was carried out based on the themes of contour, drainage and the district boundaries that made it possible to prepare the thematic maps of the watersheds, slopes, hypsometry, geomorphology and land use (1985 and 2005). The thematic maps were elaborated using the IDRISI software, which also allowed evaluation of the areas, as well as the cross tabulation between the different thematic maps. From the data analysis, one can verify that the district comprises 10 watersheds of which Ribeirão do Inferno and Marmelo Watersheds are the larger, taking up approximately 42% the municipal area. Slopes greater than 8%, those with relief varying from medially to strongly undulated, predominate the region. The degree of carving of the valley walls varies from weak to strong and drainage density varies from medium to low. Altitudes between 900 and 1200m predominate. The data originated from the maps and tables allowed comparison and analysis of the evolution of land use in the two periods and evaluation of the adequacy of land use according to the physical environment. Ten categories of land use (Pivot, Urban and Mixed Use, Rupestrian Field, Reforestation, Water Bodies, Farming, Mining, Forestry, Pasture and Savanna) were identified and mapped. In 2005, 46.22% of the area of the district was occupied by Pasture, followed by Rupestrian Fields (14.34%), Farming (16.12%) and Forest (15.49%). The other categories presented almost insignificant percentages. Within this twenty-year period, Pasture area was reduced while Farming, Urban and Mixed Use, Reforestation and Mining areas increased. A reclassification was made for the final analyses of land use in Araxá, so that only two categories remained: natural vegetation and anthropic activities. It was concluded that in terrains with high slopes, the larger areas are occupied by natural vegetation, while in terrains with low slopes, anthropic activities occupied the largest area. As for hypsometry, it is verified that in more elevated altitudes the natural vegetation (Rupestrian Field) predominates, and in lower altitudes anthropic activities predominate. The Ribeirão Marmelo Watershed is responsible for 48% of the farming area in the district; 68% of the Rupestrian Fields are located in the Ribeirão do Inferno Watershed; 98% of Mining areas are located in the Córrego do Sal, Ribeirão Capivara and Ribeirão Pirapetinga watersheds; 44% of the remaining Savanna is in the Córrego da Galinha Watershed; 42% of Forested area is located in the Ribeirão Capivara and Córrego Fundo watersheds. Geoprocessing has demonstrated itself as the best technique for achieving more accurate and reliable results. The interpretation of satellite images in different periods associated with other kinds of data (maps, laboratories and field) when integrated in a GIS, permits analysis and evaluation of the geographic space, providing important information to the municipal administrators.

O município de Araxá está localizado na Macrorregião do Alto Paranaíba no Estado de Minas Gerais, entre as coordenadas geográficas de 19°25 53 - 19°50 09 de latitude Sul e 46°44 27 - 47°13 38 de longitude Oeste de Greenwich. Com uma área de 1.166,96km2 e distante da capital mineira 367km, o município contava com uma população de 78.997 habitantes no ano de 2000. Para a realização do trabalho, foram utilizadas folhas topográficas, mapeamento geomorfológico e imagens dos satélites TM/Landsat 5 de 1985 e CCD/CBERS 2 de 2005. O levantamento do meio físico foi realizado a partir dos temas curvas de nível, drenagem e limites do município, que possibilitaram elaborar os mapas temáticos das sub-bacias hidrográficas, declividade do terreno, hipsometria, geomorfologia e uso da terra (1985 e 2005). Os mapas temáticos foram elaborados utilizando o software IDRISI, que possibilitou também a avaliação de áreas, bem como a tabulação cruzada entre os diferentes mapas temáticos. A partir da análise dos dados, pode-se verificar que o município é composto por 10 sub-bacias hidrográficas, sendo que as Sub-bacias dos Ribeirões do Inferno e Marmelo são as maiores, ocupando aproximadamente 42% da área do município. Na maior parte do município predominam as declividades superiores a 8%, ou seja, relevo variando de medianamente ondulado a fortemente ondulado. O grau de entalhamento dos vales varia de fraco a forte e a densidade de drenagem varia de média a pequena. Há um predomínio das altitudes entre 900 e 1200m. Os dados oriundos dos mapas e das tabelas possibilitaram comparar e analisar a evolução do uso da terra nos dois períodos e avaliar a adequabilidade do uso da terra em função do meio físico. Foram identificadas e mapeadas 11 categorias de uso da terra (Pivô, Urbano e Uso Misto, Campo Rupestre, Reflorestamento, Corpos d água, Agricultura, Mineração, Mata, Pastagem, Cerrado e Campo Limpo). Em 2005, 46,22% da área do município era ocupada por Pastagens, seguida pelos Campos Rupestres (14,34%), Agricultura (16,12%) e Mata (15,49%). As demais categorias ocupavam percentuais pouco significativos. De maneira geral, em 20 anos, houve uma redução na área de Pastagem e um aumento na área de Agricultura, Urbano e Uso Misto, Reflorestamento, Mineração e Mata. Para análise final do uso da terra no município de Araxá, foi feita uma reclassificação, de modo que apenas duas categorias passaram a existir, vegetação natural e atividades antrópicas. Concluiu-se que, em terrenos com altas declividades, as maiores áreas são ocupadas por vegetação natural, ao passo que, em terrenos com baixas declividades, as atividades antrópicas ocupam a maior área. Quanto à hipsometria, verifica-se que, nas altitudes mais elevadas, predomina a vegetação natural (Campo Rupestre) e, nas altitudes mais baixas, predominam as atividades antrópicas. A Sub-bacia do Ribeirão Marmelo é responsável por 48% da área agrícola do município; 68% dos Campos Rupestres estão localizados na Sub-bacia do Ribeirão do Inferno; 98% das áreas de Mineração localizam-se nas sub-bacias do Córrego do Sal, Ribeirão Capivara e Ribeirão Pirapetinga; 45% dos remanescentes de Cerrado encontram-se na Sub-bacia do Córrego da Galinha; 42% das áreas de Mata estão localizados nas sub-bacias do Ribeirão Capivara e Córrego Fundo. O geoprocessamento tem se mostrado como a melhor técnica para se chegar a resultados mais precisos e confiáveis.
