Resumo: The conilon coffee (Coffea canephora) is a greatly important crop in the Brazilian agriculture. It occupies distinguishable position among the export products, besides contributing for the job in field. In Brazil, there are few studies on production and growth of seedlings of coffee in full sun and shade systems. The experiment was mounted in the entirely randomized design in split plot in time (40, 80 and 120 days), using 10 repetitions for the characteristics of stem diameter and height, and 3 repetitions for leaf area, relation root/aerial part, total dry matter (Aerial part and root). The treatments consisted of the following levels of shading: 0% (Full sun), 22%, 50% and 88% shading. Among the characteristics evaluated only the stem diameter was not influenced by shading, in the other characteristics assessed the highest values were found for the level of 88% of shading the end of the experiment. According to these results, we observed that the level of 88% of shading contributed to the increased vegetative growth of coffee plants.
