Resumo: | During storage several factors influence jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) seed quality, with consequent effect on oil quality, mainly by increasing acidity due to oxidation and hydrolysis reactions. For biodiesel synthesis, high acidity is undesirable, because the formation of saponaceous material hinders separation of biodiesel from excess alcohol and glycerol, resulting in the formation of emulsions. Therefore, it is important to know the effects of storage conditions on the quality of grains, oil and biodiesel, in order to develop storage technology for these products, suitable for family farming or for the industry. Therefore, this study was done to evaluate the physical properties of seeds and oil chemistry during storage. The evaluations were done in the beginning and the end of the storage period. The results showed that the deterioration of jatropha seeds during storage was more pronounced at temperatures of 25oC or higher. |

The results showed that the deterioration of jatropha seeds during storage was more pronounced at temperatures of 25oC or higher.Diversos fatores podem influenciar na qualidade das sementes de pinhão-manso (Jatropha curcas L.) durante o seu armazenamento e, por conseqüência, a qualidade do óleo, sobretudo pelo aumento da acidez, devido a reações de oxidação e hidrólise. Na síntese de biodiesel, elevados índices de acidez são indesejados por ocasionar a formação de um sabonáceo e dificultar o processo de separação do biodiesel do excesso de álcool e do glicerol, produzindo emulsões. É importante que se conheça os efeitos das condições de armazenamento sobre a qualidade dos grãos, do óleo e do biodiesel, de modo a estabelecer metodologias apropriadas para a estocagem destes produtos, seja no contexto da agricultura familiar ou da indústria. Assim sendo este trabalho teve como objetivo a avaliação das propriedades físicas das sementes e químicas do óleo ao longo do armazenamento. Para isto, foi realizada, com parte das sementes, a determinação das propriedades físicas da semente, no período inicial e final do armazenamento e análises química para avaliação do óleo extraído.
