Resumo: This study aimed to compare the costs involved in operating systems and performance of manual and mechanical harvesting of sugar cane in the fields of Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ, using Santal Amazon and Brastoft A-7700 cane harvesters models. A comparison of the operating income in cutting the sugar cane, between man and machine, was performed, identifying a better performance on the mechanical system because the harvester can work as 26 field workers per hour. It was found the huge divergence to the mechanical harvest system because your benefit is bigger than cost. By using the mechanical system, it can reach 31% superior gain than manual system, getting R$ 193,144.11 per year, considering 964.2 ha of area. Analyzing the data, in relation to the area harvested mechanically, which were only 6.65% of total area, it is possible to substitute the rest of the manual area to mechanical system in order to reach more gain.

Analyzing the data, in relation to the area harvested mechanically, which were only 6.65% of total area, it is possible to substitute the rest of the manual area to mechanical system in order to reach more gain.Este trabalho teve como objetivo comparar os custos envolvidos e o desempenho operacional nos sistemas de colheita manual e mecânico da cana-de-açúcar no município de Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ, utilizando duas colhedoras autopropelidas, modelos Santal Amazon e Brastoft A-7700. Foi realizada a comparação entre o rendimento operacional no corte da cana-de-açúcar entre o homem e a máquina, sendo possível identificar um maior rendimento no corte mecânico em relação ao corte manual, pois uma colhedora de cana-de-açúcar na região equivale, em média, ao trabalho de 26 homens por hora. Pelos resultados obtidos, é evidente a grande vantagem da colheita mecanizada em relação a colheita manual, em razão de seu benefício ser maior que o custo. Este benefício significa 31% a mais de lucro com o uso da colheita mecânica em relação ao custo do sistema manual, ou seja, R$ 193.144,01 de lucro por safra, considerando uma área de 964,2 ha.
