Resumo: Among the methods of estimating reference evapotranspiration, the Penman-Monteith-FAO is considered the most accurate, however, it requires a large number of meteorological variables, making this estimate costly due to the high cost of the agrometeorological stations. On another hand, there are some others methods that require less dada, so consequently they result in a cheaper way to get the reference evapotranspiration, a condition that must be observed when users of irrigation systems are small farmers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the methods of Hargreaves-Samani, Thornthwaite-48, modified Thornthwaite, Camargo-71, Blaney-Criddle, Jensen-Haise, Radiation FAO 24, Aerodynamic and Energy balance, in estimate the reference evapotranspiration in the area of influence of the São Francisco River Transposition. The meteorological data cover the period from 1995 to 2014. The performance of the Hargreaves-Samani and Thornthwaite modified methods were rated as "great", and as they require only air temperature data, it can be recommended as an alternative for small agricultures to estimate reference evapotranspiration in the study area.
