Bourdieu, Educational Capital and Social Mobility: The Perception of African Students Course of Public Administration of the UNILAB

Resumo: This paper analyzes the expectations of social mobility of young African students who come to study public administration in Brazil. Result of the expansion of academic exchange between countries of the South, this example includes a widespread practice of social transformation through education. Bourdieu’s Theory of social distinction argues that social position depends on the family and not the educational capital. From a qualitative study, using interviews and discourse analysis, we investigated the expectations of social mobility of respondents. The results show an expectation of social mobility and a search for a social transformation. A differentiated condition for African countries may oppose the theory of Bourdieu, focused on French society, and endowed with a degree of inflation, unlike countries such students.Key-Words: Educational capital, Bourdieu, Academic interchange, African students.

Decorrência da ampliação de intercâmbio acadêmico entre países do hemisfério Sul, esse exemplo contempla uma prática difundida de transformação social com a educação. Bourdieu (2007) analisa a distinção social e defende uma limitação do capital escolar em promover a mobilidade social, sendo mais importante o capital familiar. A partir de um estudo qualitativo, com o uso de entrevistas e análise de discurso, investigamos as expectativas de mobilidade social dos respondentes. Os resultados mostram uma expectativa de mobilidade social e uma busca por uma transformação social. Uma condição diferenciada para os países africanos pode contrapor a teoria de Bourdieu, focada na sociedade francesa, dotada de uma inflação de diploma diferente dos países desses estudantes.
