Evaluation of acetal and levulinate production: from synthesis possibilities to separation

Resumo: | The production of biofuels and their additives represents alternatives to the use of fossil fuels. Levulinates (LEV) derived from cellulose and acetals (ACET) derived from hemicellulose are incorporated into fuels due to their physicochemical properties. However, large-scale production requires an understanding of the respective production processes, which necessitates scientific studies. Therefore, this review aims to discuss recent updates based on theoretical foundations regarding (i) the application of these compounds as fuel additives according to their physicochemical characteristics, (ii) the reuse of raw materials and market potential, (iii) elucidation of catalytic pathways and applied catalysts, and (iv) the use of chemical process simulators in biomass conversion routes to desired products. From the literature review, reactive systems with 90% conversion associated with the separation of target components were considered as possible scenarios, such as simulating solketal production, homologous reaction to esterification and acetalization processes. |

Los levulinatos (LEV) derivados de la celulosa y los acetals (ACET) derivados de la hemicelulosa se incorporan a los combustibles debido a sus propiedades fisicoquímicas. Sin embargo, la producción a gran escala requiere comprender los respectivos procesos de producción, lo cual implica estudios científicos. Por lo tanto, esta revisión tiene como objetivo discutir actualizaciones recientes basadas en fundamentos teóricos con respecto a (i) la aplicación de estos compuestos como aditivos de combustible según sus características fisicoquímicas, (ii) la reutilización de materias primas y el potencial del mercado, (iii) la elucidación de las vías catalíticas y los catalizadores aplicados, y (iv) el uso de simuladores de procesos químicos en las rutas de conversión de biomasa a productos deseados. A partir de la revisión bibliográfica, se consideraron como posibles escenarios los sistemas reactivos con una conversión del 90% asociada a la separación de componentes objetivo, como la simulación de la producción de solketal, la reacción homóloga para los procesos de esterificación y acetilación. Les lévulinates (LEV) dérivés de la cellulose et les acétals (ACET) dérivés de l'hémicellulose sont incorporés aux carburants en raison de leurs propriétés physico-chimiques. Cependant, la production à grande échelle nécessite une compréhension des processus de production respectifs, ce qui implique des études scientifiques. Par conséquent, cette revue vise à discuter des mises à jour récentes basées sur des fondements théoriques concernant (i) l'application de ces composés en tant qu'additifs de carburant en fonction de leurs caractéristiques physico-chimiques, (ii) la réutilisation des matières premières et le potentiel du marché, (iii) l'élucidation des voies catalytiques et des catalyseurs utilisés, et (iv) l'utilisation de simulateurs de processus chimiques dans les itinéraires de conversion de la biomasse en produits souhaités. À partir de la revue de littérature, des systèmes réactifs avec une conversion de 90 % associée à la séparation des composants cibles ont été considérés comme des scénarios possibles, tels que la simulation de la production de solkétal, la réaction homologue pour les processus d'estérification et d'acétalisation. Os levulinatos (LEV) derivados da celulose, e os acetais (ACET) derivados da hemicelulose, são incorporados a combustíveis, devido a suas propriedades físico-químicas. No entanto, a produção em escala industrial requer a compreensão dos respectivos processos produtivos, que necessita de estudos científicos. Deste modo, a presente revisão visa a partir de embasamento teórico, discutir as recentes atualizações sobre (i) aplicação dos compostos como aditivos de combustíveis de acordo com suas características físico-químicas, (ii) reaproveitamento de matérias-primas e potencial de mercado, (iii) elucidação das vias catalíticas e catalisadores aplicadas, (iv) uso de simuladores de processos químicos em rotas de conversão de biomassa em produtos de interesse. A partir do levantamento bibliográfico, sistemas reacionais com conversão de 90% associada à separação de componentes de interesse consistiram em cenários possíveis, como a simulação da produção do solketal, reação homóloga aos processos de esterificação e acetalização.
