Intersectionality, racial identity and the “brown” dilema: reflections on racial identity and heteroclassification in Brazil

Resumo: This article aims to reflect about the contribution that intersectionality – a concept that emerges with the Black Feminism movement of the late 1970s, and which denounces the inability of one-dimensional analyzes of oppression of gender or race to contribute to the emancipatory struggles of black American women – can offer to understand the phenomenon of racial identity in the Brazilian context. Considering mainly the problem in determining the racial identity of the Brazilian people who declares themselves brown just by assessing physical characteristics, we intend to demonstrate that intersectional analyzes can significantly contribute to the better realization of the heteroclassification processes established to evaluate the racial identity of candidates who compete for reserved places the race criterion in public tenders.
