Affirmative actions in postgraduate programs: current situation in the Law area

Affirmative action in Brazilian higher education began in the early years of the 21st century, to reform the chronic racial confinement of the university world. The law that imposes the adoption of socio-economic and ethnic-racial quotas by federal institutions does not require its application in postgraduate programs. But as of 2016 there is an accelerated process of implementing ethnic-racial quotas in public postgraduate courses, since the plurality of social origins and existential experiences among researchers favors the construction of a deep and especially critical/transformative scientific knowledge. It is necessary to move forward with affirmative actions in private postgraduate programs, in a participatory, dialogical process that considers the need to provide more academic and pedagogical visibility for epistemologies and lines of research aimed at understanding and transforming the social conditions experienced by the segments targeted by the quotas.
