Rail transportation in Belo Horizonte: tracks in an urban palimpsest

Resumo: The urban landscape is shaped by the dynamics of society. Their characteristics leave records in space that may remain important impressions. Moreover, using the metaphor of the urban palimpsest as a reference, this work brings a historical assessment of the adulteration process of Belo Horizonte transport infrastructure, with the replacement of rail transportation for other attributes of the urban fabric. The study presents an evaluation of mesh railing territory of Belo Horizonte at two different times, based on spatial analysis tools and through two distinct types of documentary records: the IBGE topographic maps at 1:50,000 from 1960 to 1980 and recent satellite images provided by Google Earth software.

A paisagem urbana é moldada pela dinâmica da sociedade que ao interagir no espaço insere suas características deixando registros que podem permanecer como impressões das características de um dado tempo. Com esse entendimento, utilizando da metáfora do palimpsesto urbano como referência, o presente trabalho traz uma avaliação histórica do processo de descaracterização da infraestrutura de transporte de Belo Horizonte, com a substituição do transporte sobre trilhos por outros atributos do tecido urbano. O estudo apresenta uma avaliação da malha de trilhos do território de Belo Horizonte em dois momentos distintos, com base em ferramentas de análise espacial e através de dois tipos de registros documentais distintos: cartas topográficas do IBGE em escala 1:50.000 de 1960 a 1980 e imagens orbitais recentes fornecidas pelo software Google Earth.
