This dissertation is inserted in the study of the supply of school education for adults in a situation of deprivation of liberty. Whereas in Brazil, there is not a life sentence, the person sentenced, after completion of his sentence, returns to social life. Thus, actions such as work and education are necessary in finding their rehabilitation and generation of opportunity for a life away from crime. Brazilian law, following international agreements and treaties, guarantees the right to education, which, including the incarcerated, gives him the right to redeem part of the sentence by the frequency in school activities. This study aimed to investigate how the provision of education for incarcerated adults has been implemented in the State of Minas Gerais. For this, we performed surveys plus bibliographical studies document that gave us support to understand the main points in relation to the genealogy of the prison sentence and the evolution of legislation that guarantees the detainee the right to education and redemption penalty for this activity. To collect empirical data, we performed a study in situ in the State School Maria Auxiliadora de Faria, situated in Prison Doutor Manoel Martins Lisboa Júnior in the municipality of Muriaé. Anchored in the theoretical and methodological assumptions of qualitative research, we used as procedures for data collection, semi-structured interviews and an observation guide. From the reports of the teachers in the interviews we found limitations in the development of the work, due to the physical structure of the school, especially in the planning of activities and locomotion between classrooms between halls, there is a deficiency in specific training or qualification educators, instructional materials most often are not suited to the reality that students are, and almost routinely, these are not good quality, which means that teachers buy their own material resources. But even with the difficulties, educators feel valued in the development of their work and they make it with competence and dedication, providing the academic success of some students. While working with the maximum capacity of enrolled people, the school under study cannot offer places to all interested sentenced, which violates the right of the prisoner.
