In Brazil, most mine rejects are disposed as pulp in reservoirs formed by dikes and dams. The height of these dikes and dams depends on reject transport, sedimentation and density in the reservoirs. Among these processes, sedimentation and density produce variations in volume, thus being of great importance in the determination of these structures’ height. Based on Kynch’s theory, sedimentation depends on the relationship between void ratio and the permeability coefficient of the reject while density, besides this relation, depends on the relation between the effective tension and the void ratio of the rejects. These relations can be obtained in the laboratory, with density assay induced by percolation forces (Hydraulic Consolidation Test - HCT). However, in order to interpret the results of these assays, additional steps are necessary, rendering interpretation longer and less precise. The main objectives of this study were: first, to develop a new procedure to interpret and implement the HCT assays and, secondly, to increase the data base with HCT assays in different Brazilian mineral rejects. The results indicate that the new methodology made the HCT test faster, and that the set of results obtained with the several rejects tested has contributed significantly to increase the database of HCT results of Brazilian mine rejects.
