Volunteer Geographic Information (VGI) features a specific type of user-generated content that involves Web 2.0 resources, neogeography, collective intelligence and geographic data. Geobrowsers can collect and provide VGI, however currently these systems do not follow rules or standards for documenting VGI, making it difficult, access, retrieval and data interoperability between VGI systems. Moreover, the quality of data collected by VGI systems has often been questioned. The overall objective of this dissertation is to document VGI from dynamic metadata and thereby reduce barriers to interoperability, quality improvement and analysis of volunteer data. To achieve this objective, the following products were developed: (1) A framework ClickOnMap to facilitate the development and customization of a collaborative environment for Geobrowsers, (2) DM4VGI, a template with dynamic metadata to document and verify the quality of a VGI and (3) an architecture for VGI document in a collaborative environment of a geobrowser. The system has been tested on DM4VGI Citizen Viçosa - MG, which was developed from ClickOnMap with full support DM4VGI. All VGIs were properly documented and have metadata about its quality. Thus, voluntary data become interoperable.
