Resumo: | The red beans are traditionally consumed and are cultivated by small producers in the region of Zona da Mata, in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Since the late 1990 s, the Bean Breeding Program, of the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) has worked with the breeding of this bean type. The main strategy used by UFV with the red bean breeding is the recurrent selection. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic progress after three recurrent selection´s cycles in the red bean breeding and to identify promising lines for future inclusion in the evaluations called Value for Cultivation and Use (VCU) in Minas Gerais. There were derived lines in each selection cycle (C0, CI and CII) and these lines were evaluated in the same experiment, in the winter season 2011, in the Experimental Station of the Department of Plant Science, UFV, Coimbra MG. The experiment consisted of 225 treatments - 220 lines (30 of the C0, 30 of the CI and 160 of the CII) and five control treatments. The simple square lattice design was used, with plots consisting of two rows of 1,0 m. The following characteristics were evaluated: grain yield, plant architecture, rust severity and grain aspect. Based on the average of the most promising lines of each cycle (30 of each) the genetic progress was estimated. The genetic progress after three cycles of recurrent selection was 40.05% for grain yield, 59.21% for rust severity, 12.90% for plant architecture and 12.76% for grain aspect, confirming the efficiency of this strategy in the bean breeding. Red bean lines better than the cultivar Ouro Vermelho were obtained, with high yield, good grain aspect, good plant architecture and resistant to rust. These lines have potential to be included in future trials of VCU in Minas Gerais. |
