Resumo: Karate as a sport is a battle where victory is usually decided by minor differences in performance among athletes. The adoption of an adequate nutritional strategy is critical to the athlete's performance. In this perspective, the way the fighter hydrates himself can change the outcome of the training process. This paper is divided into three studies. The first study aimed to investigate the habits and knowledge concerning the hydration of jiu-jitsu, judo and karate s Brazilians fighters. In the second study, the objective was to identify the effects of consuming a sports drink (CHO-E) on anaerobic performance and body balance karate s fighters after a training session. In the third study, the objective was to evaluate the effects of CHO-E on karate s fighters biochemical, subjective and physiological variables during a training session. For the first study, respondents were 670 fighters, 250 karatekas (KA), 230 judokas (JU), 200 jiu-jitsu s fighters (JJ). We used a self-administered questionnaire with 18 objective questions. For the second and third studies, 10 fighters (69.14 ± 9.80 kg body mass, 1.75 ± 0.11 m in height, and 14.33 ± 4.12% body fat) underwent two karate training sessions by performing fluid ingestion (3 mL/kg body weight) with placebo drink (PLA) or CHO-E every 20 minutes. Before and after these sessions were performed: weight, anaerobic physical tests, body balance test, and blood collection. Throughout the training were recorded heart rate and subjective variables. Approximately 50% of KA and JU, and 59.0% of the fighters JJ always hydrate during their training (p <0.05). The drink most often used for hydration is water (84.0% JJ; 88.0% and 90.9% JU KA, p <0.05). JU athletes, 40.3% reported having no idea of how it should be moisture, 46.5% and 15.0% KA JJ, all p <0.05. The source of advice about hydration JU was more consulted by the physician (39.9%, p <0.05), by KA was the coach (39.07%, p <0.05), and the JJ was the physical coach (18.0%). In the second study, the body mass variation in the CHO-E group was -0.69 ± 0.30 kg, -0.99 ± 0.01% (p = 0.001), and PLA was -0.88 ± 0 , 44 kg, -0.99 ± 0.01% (p = 0.001), with no difference between treatments (p = 0.14). No significant differences were observed for consumption of CHO-E on anaerobic performance in the tapping test, in counter moviment jump, in the medicine ball throw, the abdominal flexion test; the same was true for differences in favor of the PLA in the manual grip test, and body balance test. In the third study, treatments CHO-E and PLA differed in plasma electrolytes, urine density, perceived exertion and heart rate. The fighters have assessed knowledge and misconceptions about the hydration habits theme, which can limit performance in training and competitions. The consumption of CHO-E does not show better results than the use of PLA for anaerobic performance and static balance in karate s fighters evaluated. The conditions CHO-E and PLA showed similar responses as indicators of body fluid homeostasis, heart rate and perceived exertion.
