Uso de tesauro e topic maps na recuperação de metadados em infraestruturas de dados espaciais: um estudo de caso do ecossistema antártico

The preoccupation about environmental factors is a reality in all the sectors of society, especially when concerning researchers and professionals who work directly with the environment. In this context, several researches have been developed, trying to get answers about the effects of the global heating in the Antarctic ecosystem, which generates a big amount of geospatial data. The dissemination and sharing of this data can have enormous projection if supported by a computational environment. This setting presents many challenges in the Computer Science research, both in the physical (diversity of storage structures) and conceptual level (as the diversity of perspectives and knowledge domains). Infrastructures of Spatial Data enable the cooperation and geospatial data sharing; however, the open and distributed character of these infrastructures is a factor that increases the difficulty of retrieving and sharing these data. Researches developed with the aim of retrieving information, and which utilize semantic artifacts as supporting instruments, have been analyzed. However, there haven't been found any works that approached the information retrieval in catalogs of metadata combined with functional and intuitive mechanisms for the user. The aim of this dissertation is to build a search engine that has semantic as main point, which means, the understanding of the context in the metadata research is prioritized. The suggested mechanism comprises a system of data retrieval in metadata catalogs based on artifacts of knowledge representation, such as thesaurus, topic maps and visual techniques. The simulations performed through a case study enabled to verify the viability of the system, in the context of a Spatial Data Infrastructure regarding the Antarctic ecosystem. It was also possible to check the importance of the users' capacitating in the production of geographic metadata. The analysis and discussion of the results obtained with the simulations showed that the efficiency of the proposed search engine is linked to the quality of the metadata production. This shows the viability of utilizing thesauri and topic maps as semantic artifacts for the metadata creation and retrieval.
