The aim of this work was perform an exploration, description and analysis of the potential for ecological tourism at Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil. For this purpose, it was applied a test, as the semi structured format, on the governmental agencies and institutes directly related to the ecological tourism activities in order to list the most important points for visitors who enjoys ecological activities. All cited points, located in a maximum distance of 10 km from the central point of the Mariana City, considering Cláudio Manoel Square as reference, were visited, detailed description, and cataloged using many photos, what premised a better interpretation of the obtained results. Descriptions of ecological points for tourism were separated in three different stages: access, environmental attributes, and ecological potential. On total, it was evaluated 16 ecological points by using a matrix composed by 14 elements and its respective levels and notes. From this technique, it was possible to organize the ecological points on a preferential order according its degree of importance to ecological tourism. Notwithstanding the ecological tourism is still incipiently explored at Mariana City as well as the limited area evaluated on this study, One concludes that although the ecoturism not yet to be worked in the study area, therefore exactly having this study a delimited area the city of Mariana possesss potentiality and resources to promote the activity, the results premises to conclude this town shows 50% of high potential for ecological tourism and 50% of middle potentiality for ecological tourism.
