Resumo: | Behavior is the expression of an organism's interactions with the environmental stimulus. Even though behavioral studies are done in an individual level, the conclusions are drawn for populations. The importance of an individual's behavior have been studied on several animal groups, a few examples are: primates, mammals and insects. From these results, the consistent individual behavior differences in time and in different contexts are called "animal personality". Consistent individual differences in animal traits can be favored if they contribute to differences in productivity and adaptation. The insecticides are an environmental stress factor for the individuals in their natural environment; they can affect the insect behavior by stimulating or inhibiting their activity. A new proposal for evaluating the effect of insecticides in pests is made in this work wich purpose was to evaluate the individual behavioral responses in Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, 1855 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and to detect a possible correlation with the survival time in treated deltamethrin environments. Some physiological traits that could influence survival times were evaluated as well. Through the tested behaviors, it was proven the existence of individuality on the insects belonging to the 15 brazilian populations used. This behavioral individuality had a direct influence on the insects' survival times. It was also confirmed difference in survival between populations which was attributed to differences in the resistance mechanisms they have. The possible ecological, evolutive and toxicological implications of animal personality and survival times to insecticides are discussed. |
