Resumo: This study was conducted in facilities of Departamento de Zootecnia of Universidade Federal de Viçosa in the period from October 2007 to February 2008. Two experiments were conducted, in the first experiment the objective was to evaluate through chemical analysis and In vitro degradation, based on gas production kinetics, the sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum L.) In natura and dehydrated with different particles sizes of and dehydration temperatures. A total of 300kg of integral sugar cane (whole plant) were chopped in two different particles sizes (1,0-3,0 and> 4.0 cm) and dehydrated under two temperatures (50 and 60 C for 48 hours until constant weight) in a prototype of dehydration oven with forced air and digital control of temperature. After dehydration, the dehydrated sugar cane was bagged and stored in covered natural environment by 0, 60 and 120 days. A completely randomized block design, characterized by weeks of dehydration, was used. Sub-samples of sugar cane In natura and dehydrated and stored were analyzed for determination of dry matter (DM), ash, crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), neutral detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein (NDFap), acid detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein (ADFap), neutral detergent insoluble protein (PIDN), acid detergent insoluble protein (PIDA), lignin (LIG), insoluble indigestible neutral detergent fiber (NDFi ), and evaluation of In vitro total carbohydrates (CHOT) degradation, based on gas production kinetics of dehydrated sugar cane. The process of dehydration and storage did not alter the chemical components and In vitro degradation of CHOT, consequently the nutritional value as compared with sugarcane In natura. In the second experiment, the objective was to evaluate through chemical analysis and In vitro degradation, based on gas production kinetics, the sugar cane In natura submitted to treatment with calcium oxide (CaO) and under different times of treatment. A total of 300 kg of chopped integral sugar cane were submitted to different levels of CaO treatment (0.0, 0.75 and 1.5% as fed) and different treatment times (0, 24 and 48, 72 hours), in a completely randomized design in 3x4 factorial arrangement. Sub-samples were analyzed to determine DM, ash, CP, EE, NDFap, ADFap, NDFi, PIDN, PIDA, LIG, and evaluation of in vitro degradation of CHOT, based on gas production kinetics, of the treated sugar cane. There was an increase in DM, ash, CP and NDFi levels and reduction of NDF and NDFap levels of sugar cane, which increased with the levels of treatment and treatment time with CaO. There was an increase in the content of ADFap the first 24 hours and a sharp drop after this time. There was an improvement in the efficiency of In vitro CHOT degradation of sugar cane treated with CaO until 24 hours treatment time. Subsequent to this interval, the efficiency of In vitro CHOT degradation of sugar cane treated with CaO was lower than the reference value of sugar cane In natura. Within the levels evaluated, 0.75% level of CaO was the most efficient of In vitro CHOT degradation sugar cane for the different treatment times. The process of treatment of sugar cane with CaO allows reducing of NDF, ADF and NDFap levels, without any changes in lignin levels. The level of 1.5% CaO, at treatment time of 24 hours, was most effective for gas production volume and In vitro CHOT degradation of sugar cane and the level of 0.75% of CaO for the treatment time of 48 hours of, was most effective for the gas production volume and In vitro CHOT degradation of sugar cane.

Dois experimentos foram realizados, no primeiro experimento teve por objetivo avaliar através da análise química e degradação in vitro, com base na cinética de produção de gases, a cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum officinarum L.) in natura e desidratada com diferentes tamanhos de partículas e temperaturas de secagem. Trezentos quilogramas de cana- de-açúcar integral (planta inteira) foram picadas em dois diferentes tamanhos de partículas (1,0-3,0 e > 4,0 cm) e desidratadas sob duas temperaturas (50 e 60 ºC por 48 horas em peso constante) em um protótipo de estufa de desidratação, com ventilação forçada e controle digital de temperatura. Após a desidratação, a cana-de-açúcar desidratada foi ensacada e armazenada em ambiente natural coberto por 0, 60 e 120 dias. O delineamento utilizado foi blocos casualizados sendo os blocos caracterizados pelas semanas de desidratação. Sub-amostras da cana-de-açúcar in natura e desidratada e armazenada foram analisadas para determinação de matéria seca (MS), matéria mineral (MM), proteína bruta (PB), extrato etéreo (EE), fibra em detergente neutro corrigida para cinzas e proteína (FDNcp), fibra em detergente ácido corrigida para cinzas e proteína (FDAcp), proteína insolúvel em detergente neutro (PIDN), proteína insolúvel em detergente ácido (PIDA), lignina (LIG), fibra indigestível insolúvel em detergente neutro (FDNi), e avaliação da degradação in vitro carboidratos totais (CHOT), com base na cinética de produção de gases, da cana- de-açúcar desidratada. O processo de desidratação e armazenamento não alterou os componentes químicos e a degradação in vitro dos carboidratos totais, conseqüentemente o valor nutricional quando comparado a cana in natura. No segundo experimento, teve por objetivo avaliar através da análise químicos e degradação in vitro, com base na cinética de produção de gases, a cana-de-açúcar submetida ao tratamento com óxido de cálcio (CaO) e sob diferentes tempos de tratamento. Trezentos quilos de cana-de-açúcar integral picada foram submetidos a diferentes níveis de tratamento de CaO (0,0; 0,75 e 1,5% na MN) e diferentes tempos de tratamento (0, 24 e 48, 72 horas), em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em arranjo fatorial 3x4. Sub-amostras foram analisadas para a determinação MS, MM, PB, EE, FDNcp, FDAcp, FDNi, PIDN, PIDA, LIG, e avaliação da degradação in vitro carboidratos totais (CHOT), com base na cinética de produção de gases, da cana-de-açúcar tratada. Houve aumento nos teores MS, MM, PB e FDNi e redução nos teores de FDN e FDNcp da cana-de-açúcar tratada, que aumentaram com os níveis de tratamento e tempo de tratamento com CaO. Observou-se aumento no teor de FDAcp nas primeiras 24 horas e uma queda brusca após decorrido este tempo. Houve uma melhora na eficiência de degradação in vitro dos CHOT da cana-de-açúcar tratada com CaO até o tempo de tratamento de 24 horas. Posteriormente a este intervalo de tempo, a eficiência de degradação In vitro dos CHOT da cana-de-açúcar tratada com CaO foi inferior ao valor de referência da cana-de-açúcar in natura. Dentro os níveis avaliados, o nível de 0,75% CaO foi o que apresentou melhor eficiência de degradação In vitro dos CHOT da cana-de-açúcar para os diferentes tempos de tratamento.O processo tratamento da cana-de-açúcar com CaO permite a redução dos teores de FDN, FDNcp e FDA, sem nenhuma alteração dos níveis de lignina.
