Miridae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) comprises 10,000 described species. It is estimated that the world fauna will approach 20,000 once the neotropical species are fully studied. In Brazil, there are 1,100 registered species and the knowledge of the plant bugs for most states is still incipient. In order to increase the available information of the family for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, the aims of this work are to describe the species in terms of their host plants, the annual periods of adult occurrence and with phytogeographical regions; to elaborate keys for subfamilies, tribes and genera with diagnostic descriptions and species pictures; additionally to establish a state reference collection for the Museu de Ciências Naturais of the Fundação Zoobotânica, RS. The data about Miridae was obtained from papers on neotropical taxonomic and 700 borrowed specimens. The mirids found in RS represent six subfamilies, 17 tribes, 73 genera and 164 species, expanding by approximately 483% the number of known species. The months of greatest distribution were from October through May, with a peak in October. Most genera are distributed in forests and vegetation with oceanic influence. Four genera were found in nine vegetation types and 16 were found in only one, indicating possible endemism. These results probably show a greater collection effort in these areas.
