Resumo: | In the first chapter records from seven body weights from hatch to the sixth week of life of meat-type quails were used and from this data set 15 non-linear models were fitted: Brody, Gompertz, Hill, Janoschek, Logistic, Meloun I, Meloun II, Mitscherlich, Michaelis-Menten, Modified Michaelis-Menten, Richards, Schnute, Von Bertalanffy, Weibull and Morgan-Mercer-Flodin. Parameters were adjusted coefficient of determination, Akaike information criterion and Schwarz Bayesian information criterion, Durbin-Watson statistics, coefficients of variation for initial and final growth and percentage of convergence, clustered using the methodology of principal components. The models with the greatest number of grouped quality parameters are Weibull, Gompertz, Logistic and Janoschek being more indicated for fitting growth curves in meat- type quail. In a second study we evaluated a two-step approach for studying genotype by environment interaction in growth curves. We used data from 2274 quails, from two lines, raised in ten levels of crude protein (24-33% CP), weighed from hatch until six weeks old totalizing up to seven measurements of body weight. The Gompertz model was fitted and the parameters used as phenotype in reaction norm analysis using animal model with level of dietary protein being the environmental gradient. Reaction norms of genetic values of curve parameters, heritability, genetic correlations and projected growth curves from the mean of fixed effects group and breeding values for each animal were estimated. The parameter related to asymptotic weight was the most stable in reaction norms, heritability and genetic correlations, but the parameters related to the initial conditions and the slope of growth experienced strong influence of nutritional gradient. The nutritional environment used to breed quails should be similar to that used by the final user in order to minimize the differences from elite stocks. |

The nutritional environment used to breed quails should be similar to that used by the final user in order to minimize the differences from elite stocks.
