A ciência em rede: os vínculos entre instituições e cientistas no contexto da modernização da agricultura (1958-1973)

The objective of this dissertation was to investigate the links between scientists and institutions in the context of the modernization of agriculture. Our central assumption relates techno scientific production and society, since the technologies are composed of a complex network of relationships between social actors. We must therefore examine the nature of interactions of different stakeholders in the construction of scientific production for the field. The Rural University de Minas Gerais, and later the Viçosa Federal University, through a partnership with Purdue University in the United States, promoted a scientific exchange supported by USAID. For this research, we selected documents related to the link between the two universities, in this case, the reports of the covenant Purdue-UREMG/UFV and institutional newspapers. Regarding the association of scientists with the institutions involved in this agreement, we used the following research problem: what is the impact of these institutions on research from the University? How the research agendas are shaped by the influence of these bonds? We note with this investigation that techno scientific production in UREMG / UFV was made possible by the existence of the scientific network in Viçosa, since the composition of the pool of scientists involved a range of stakeholders. In this case, the network not only included members of the scientific community, but also politicians, state bureaucrats and private companies. Even in position supposed fragility of Brazilian scientists before the contact with the Americans, the bargaining power was triggered by the researchers to develop their interests. In addition to this diagnosis, we used the analysis of Ceres Journal an important journal of UFV nearby with the reading of the reports of the Project seeking to problematize the involvement of researchers and other actors in the network in scientific practice. The research directed to the improvement of corn and soybeans involved the presence of technicians, consultants and researchers from Purdue University. The attraction of resources, increased equipment of laboratories and assistance in fieldwork enabled increased research and consequently the increase of published papers in the journal study. The main legacy of the agreement on scientific practice was certainly the guidance of scientific projects and hence the proposition research agendas. Thus, the presence of foreign scientists contributed to the revitalization of research in the University. Obviously, the project envisaged development in the United States was experienced without much questioning by scientists here. However, we note that the American presence in the scientific network meant protagonism complete or absolute submission in research practice. The conduct of many projects initiated by foreign teachers were continued or gained new directions.
