Resumo: This study was carried out to evaluate the capacity of the urban, solid and stabilized (old RSU) residue aged 20 years approximately and taken away from dump in removing the metals found in the percolate produced by urban, solid residue recently collected (new RSU). In addition, the influence of the residue layer from civil construction (RCC) on the concentration of pollutants from the effluent of the columns infilled with old RSU was also evaluated. For the production of new RSU percolate, a fiberglass reservoir with 10,000 L capacity was infilled with this material collected in Viçosa -MG. Six columns constituted by reinforced concrete piers with 3.0 m height were infilled with old RSU, that was collected in the dump of the Visconde de Rio Branco county MG. Three from these columns contained a layer of 0.30m RCC, but the other three ones had none. The percolate. The new RSU column produced percolate was enriched with heavy metals, in order to make easier the identification of the effect of the treatments. Adsorption isotherms of the metals Zn, Cd, Cu and Pb were obtained in sieved material of the old RSU agitated with percolate of the new RSU enriched with these metals. The best adjustments for Cd and Zn were obtained, by using the Tenkim model. No good adjustments of the models to the data were obtained for Pb, and the potential model showed better adjustment to the data obtained for Cu. After mass balance, it was observed that Cd and Zn showed lower concentration in the effluents of the RSU columns that had no RCC layer than in the columns containing them. A very low percent of the exchangeable sites of old RSU were occupied by the heavy metals, so indicating that their retention should occur for long recirculation period of the percolate in the RSU columns. Just as proposed, the treatment system with recirculation of the new RSU percolate in the old RSU columns showed to be efficient in removing the pollutants, therefore in accordance with the requirements of environmental agencies. Although the RCC layer had no positive effect on the removal of heavy metals, which is probably related to the poor granulometric reactivity of the material, the RCC layer showed to be important for the general improvement of the quality of the percolate recirculated in RSU columns.

Although the RCC layer had no positive effect on the removal of heavy metals, which is probably related to the poor granulometric reactivity of the material, the RCC layer showed to be important for the general improvement of the quality of the percolate recirculated in RSU columns.Com a realização desse trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar a capacidade do resíduo sólido urbano estabilizado (RSU velho), de cerca de 20 anos de idade, retirado de lixão em remover metais pesados presentes no percolado produzido por resíduo sólido urbano recém coletado (RSU novo), além de avaliar a influência da presença da camada de resíduo de construção civil (RCC) na concentração de poluentes do efluente das colunas preenchidas com RSU velho. Para produção de percolado de RSU novo, um reservatório de fibra de vidro, com capacidade de 10.000 litros, foi preenchido com o referido material, que foi coletado em Viçosa-MG. Seis colunas, constituídas por tubulões de concreto armado, de 3,0 m de altura, foram preenchidas com RSU velho, coletado no Lixão do Município de Visconde do Rio Branco MG, sendo que três delas continham camada de 0,30 m de RCC e três delas não. O percolado produzido na coluna de RSU novo foi enriquecido com metais pesados, a fim de possibilitar maior facilidade na identificação do efeito dos tratamentos. Foram obtidas isotermas de adsorção dos metais Zn, Cd, Cu e Pb em material peneirado do RSU velho agitado com percolado do RSU novo enriquecido com os referidos metais. Os melhores ajustes para Cd e Zn foram obtidos utilizando-se o modelo Tenkim, não foram obtidos bons ajustes de modelos aos dados obtidos para o Pb e o modelo potencial apresentou melhor ajuste aos dados obtidos para o Cu. Após balanço de massas, observou-se que o Cd e o Zn apresentaram menor concentração nos efluentes das colunas de RSU que não tinham a camada de RCC do que nas colunas que os continham. Percentual muito baixo dos sítios trocáveis do RSU velho foram ocupados pelos metais pesados, indicando que a retenção dos mesmos deve ocorrer por longo período de tempo de recirculação do percolado nas colunas de RSU. O sistema de tratamento, tal como proposto, com a recirculação de percolado de RSU novo em colunas de RSU velho, mostrou-se eficiente na remoção de poluentes, encontrando-se em conformidade com as exigências de órgãos ambientais.
