Plant resistance has been little investigated and utilized in the integrated management of bamboo pests. This research had the purpose of evaluating damage level by adult insects of Dinoderus minutus (Fabr.) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) to bamboo stakes cut under different moon phases. The effect of time of the year during bamboo cutting was also evaluated. The bamboo species studied ware Phyllostachys sp., Bambusa vulgaris var. vittata A.C. Rivieri, Dendrocalamus giganteus Munro and Bambusa vulgaris vulgaris Schard. Ex, Wendl. The experiment was carried out in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, in five locations, from July to December, 1998. Statistical design was that of randomized blocks, with five replicates. The numbers of holes and of adult insects ware counted per bamboo stake, during 20 moon phases. Factorial analyses, correlation tests and interactions compared by Scott-knott test (p£0,05) were used to analyse the data. Moon phase at the time bamboo was cut had an effect on injury by insects. Full moon phase was that under which the least average amount of holes and of adult insects were found. The greatest values of these were obtained in July and August as compared to September, October and November. Phyllostachys sp. had the lowest average injury level. Bambusa vulgris vulgaris had moderate resistence whereas B. vulgaris var. vittata was susceptible. Dendrocalamus giganteus was considered highly susceptible due to highest demage it exhibited. Interaction analyses pointed that the best moon phase for cutting D. giganteus in July and August was full moon; in September waining, waxing and new moon and in November, waxing, full and waining moon, Moon phase indicated for cutting B. vulgaris var. vittata in July was waining moon; in August, new moon; in October full moon and waining moon. In November, full moon should be avoided and in September, the only moon phase to be avoided for cutting was waining. For B. vulgaris vulgaris, the recommendations for bamboo cutting were: July full moon; August new moon; September waxing, full and waining moon and in November, waxing. Cutting of Phyllostachys sp. was not influenced by moon phases in terms of insect injury, except in October, when cutting should be avoided in waining moon.
