Parque Halfeld e Praça da Estação, Juiz de Fora MG: Uma leitura histórica, paisagística e urbanística

The objective of this work was to study the historical evolution of two important public spaces in downtown Juiz de Fora-MG: Parque Halfeld and Praça da Estação and its consequent reflection on use, design and vegetation. Both spaces were built in the early 20th Century and were part of downtown daily life. Thus, periodical visits to both areas were made and informal talks with people who frequented them were carried out as well as semi-structured interviews of people who followed the evolution of the park and the square. The snowball method was used whereby an interviewee indicates another person to be interviewed, besides review of specific literature, photo analysis and consultation of municipal public organs. A report was prepared covering three chronological periods: the first, time of construction; the second, the end of the Vargas period; and the third, the year 2000. A photographic assessment was presented of each period, highlighting the format of each space along time and their uses. It was concluded that the contemporary preference for using private spaces rather than public ones, which was initiated by the elite and accelerated with the invention of the car, did not diminish the importance of the spaces studied. New uses, different from those for which the spaces had been originally planned, were confirmed to have been conferred to the two spaces, such as: passage place, resting rooms, and leisure for the elderly. It was also observed that it is inadequate to name Parque Halfeld a park, since, according to the concepts studied, it presents characteristics of a square rather than of a park.
