Resumo: | Child work is a growing problem worldwide, influenced by poverty and labor market conditions, operating through family and business preferences and behaviors based on values, needs and social institutional variables. Although child labor is prohibited in Brazil for children below the age of 16, IBGE figures show that 5 million young people aged 5 to 17 are working today in Brazil, which stands third in the global ranking, only below Guatemala and Haiti. OIT is presently concerned with those child labor modalities which are difficult to eradicate due to their invisibility, such as domestic work. Thus, this research aimed to analyze the nature and implications of domestic work performed by children and young people in the municipality of Viçosa /MG. A quantitativequalitative research was based on the theory of social representations, with the participants consisting of 7- to 15- year- old girls who studied in local municipal/state high schools and whose families received financial government help. The participants were mostly Black, from 4-member families, with an average of 4 school years and a month income ranging from 1 to 2 minimal wages. Most of the girls stated having their first work at their own homes, around the ages from 6 to 9, doing house cleaning and that work intensity increased with time. The main motive for domestic work was both spontaneity and sense of responsibility, since the girls felt happy and obliged to help their mother who worked outside home to provide to the family. The social representations on the nature and aspects of the everyday family reality leads to the idea that child work should have both an obligation and a help component, in function of the values associated to the reciprocity debt to the family, (especially the mother), and to the very natural acceptance of domestic work as a woman/girl attribute. This relation of obligation with a significant degree of freedom, gratuity and spontaneity reveals the solidary nature of domestic work performed by children/adolescents in the municipality of Viçosa /MG. |

This relation of obligation with a significant degree of freedom, gratuity and spontaneity reveals the solidary nature of domestic work performed by children/adolescents in the municipality of Viçosa /MG.O trabalho infantil é um problema de ampla dimensão em todo o mundo.
