Resumo: Disturbances due natural habitat replacement and fragmentation by commercial forest plantations augment extinction rates for wildlife populations and, consequently, for species. Many Brazilian forest companies have acknowledged these negative aspects, and they have been attempting to improve the environmental performance of their planting, growing and harvesting technologies. Bearing this in mind, we studied the current situation of wildlife programs in Brazilian forest companies affiliated with the Society of Forestry Research (SIF). Aware that the presence of autochthonous animals in forestry projects serves as a bioindicator, we inventoried infra-structure available for wildlife programs and assessed conservation and other management techniques used by these companies. We investigated the situation of 42 Brazilian firms (22 Associate Companies and 20 Co-Participant Companies) that have forest plantations. Information was obtained through a questionnaire sent to and received from the companies by e-mail. Among the results, we call special attention to the fact that 90.9% of the Associate Companies had already carried out qualitative surveys on wild fauna, whereas only 45.0% of the Co-Participant Companies had done so. On the other hand, only 68.2% of the Associates and 25.0% of the Co-Participants had done quantitative studies, leading us to conclude that many of them will face difficulties in manipulating fauna resources due to lack of information on population stocks. In general, we observed a notorious lack of infra-structure in the surveyed companies needed to specifically assist conservation and other wildlife management projects. However, we auspiciously observed that the following techniques are commonly adopted by Associate Companies: interconnection of plant community fragments, conservation of natural vegetation strips next to production forest plantations, enrichment plantings within natural forest reserves, environmental education programs for both staff and general public, surveillance support by qualified agencies, and integrated control of predators and diseases.
