Resumo: In Brazil, production of milk is an increasingly more competitive. Therefore it is important to quantify and qualify the factors that can influence this production, seeking greater profit, in an attempt to meet the national demand. Bovine Mastitis is a intramammary infection caused mainly by bacterias and causes great economic loss to farmers. The treatment of disease is based on antibiotics, but new studies have sought alternative treatment because of the increased incidence of resistance to the drugs traditionally used. Medicinal plant drugs have been increasingly recognized by the scientific community as an alternative to antibiotics produced industrially. Aquatic plants, in particular, have attracted the interest of researchers for showing promising results as antimicrobial agents The aim of this study, was evaluated the antimicrobial potency of the plant Salvinia auriculata and a herbal soap formulated with hexanic extract of this plant. The macrophyte was collected in Viçosa, in the University campus. The roots were dried and subjected to extraction with hexane. The extract was submitted to a chromatographic column and two compounds were isolated (stigmasterol and 3- Friedelinol) belonging to the class of terpenes. The molecular structures were determined by means of their spectral data (1H and 13C NMR). In this study, the herbal soap demonstrated good results in vitro as well as in vivo. The herbal soap formulated with Salvinia demonstrated high potency against skin flora and indicates the potential of the plant as excipient in the production of antiseptic soaps for combating skin infections especially in the tropics. These findings have high economic, industrial and medical significance.

These findings have high economic, industrial and medical significance.
