Resumo: | The dynamics of herbage accumulation is defined by the balance between the processes of growth and senescence, two antagonistic processes that define the maximum herbage accumulation. Understanding these processes in an integrated form (accumulation dynamics) in a plant community permits the management of the efficiency of herbage harvesting more consistently, ensuring significant improvement in animal productivity. The objectives of this work was to evaluate the dynamic patterns of accumulation of dry matter pasture of mulatto grass subjected to rotational grazing strategies based on the criterion of light interception by the canopy, evaluate the processes of growth and senescence of the pasture during different stages of regrowth, assess the efficiency of utilization of herbage produced. The treatments consisted of combinations of two severities (postgrazing heights of 15 and 20 cm) and two grazing intervals (time necessary to the canopy to reach 95 and 100% light interception during regrowth - LI) and were allocated to 16 experimental units (each paddock of 1,200 m2) as a 2x2 factorial using complete block design with four replications. From January 2008 to March 2009, the processes of growth (stems and leaves) and senescence in basal and aerial as well as efficiency of utilization of herbage were evaluated. The processes involved in the dynamics of herbage accumulation varied depending on the seasons, and the grass had a higher flow of tissue during periods of better environmental conditions (summers of 2008 and 2009). The management strategies characterized by the frequency and severity of defoliation affected the processes involved in the dynamics of accumulation. This effect was also observed throughout the different stages of growth. Under these conditions swards grazed at 95% LI associated with height of 20 cm post-grazing showed better results of herbage accumulation and utilization efficiency of herbage produced. |

O entendimento desses processos de forma integrada (dinâmica do acúmulo) em uma comunidade de plantas permite gerenciar a eficiência de colheita da forragem de forma mais consistente, garantindo melhoria significativa em produtividade animal. Assim, os objetivos com este trabalho foram avaliar os padrões de dinâmica de acúmulo de massa seca de pastos de capim-mulato submetidos a estratégias de pastejo rotativo baseadas no critério de interceptação de luz pelo dossel forrageiro; avaliar os processos de crescimento e senescência dos pastos durante as diferentes fases da rebrotação; avaliar a eficiência de utilização da forragem produzida. Os tratamentos corresponderam a combinações entre duas severidades (alturas pós-pastejo de 15 e 20 cm) e dois intervalos de pastejo (período de tempo necessário para o dossel atingir 95 e 100% de interceptação de luz durante a rebrotação – IL), e foram alocados às 16 unidades experimentais (piquetes de 1.200 m2 cada) segundo arranjo fatorial 2x2 e delineamento de blocos completos, com quatro repetições. Foram avaliados, de janeiro de 2008 a março de 2009, os processos de crescimento (colmo e folhas) e de senescência em perfilhos basais e aéreos, além da eficiência de utilização da forragem. Os processos envolvidos na dinâmica de acúmulo de forragem variaram em função das épocas do ano, sendo que a gramínea apresentou maior fluxo de tecido nos períodos de melhores condições ambientais (verões 2008 e 2009). As estratégias de manejo caracterizadas pela frequência e severidade de desfolhação afetaram os processos envolvidos na dinâmica de acúmulo. Esse efeito também foi observado ao longo das diferentes fases do crescimento.
