Resumo: | The objective of this study was to evaluate the properties of the briquettes made with charcoal fines for power generation. To cook them, three fractions of charcoal fines (20, 35 and 60 mesh) and binders pregelatinized starch, babassu flour, dextrin, sodium silicate, in proportions of 15, 25 and 35 %, and the binder-based tar in proportions of 70, 80 and 90% were used. Initially, the coal was produced, fragmented, ground, and sieved. The fines were then mixed with binders and homogenized. 30 g of the mixture were weighed, and put under a press of nine tons for one minute. Curing the binder was obtained by heating the briquettes in an oven at 200º C for 30 minutes. Those made of tar were heated for 1 h at 150º C, 1h at 200º C, 1h at 350º C and 1h at 450º C. Ten briquettes per treatment were produced, totaling 600. The apparent density was obtained following the methodology described in ABNT NBR 9165, standards. For chemical analysis (moisture, volatiles materials, ash content, and fixed carbon), the methodology expressed in ABNT NBR 8112 was applied, and the briquettes calorific value was determined, using the described procedures by ABNT NBR 8633. According to the results, the briquettes produced with tar showed the highest calorific average values, with results exceeding 7200 kcal/kg. The highest average values for the volatile materials were found in the briquettes produced with starch binders, especially those among the binders pregelatinized starch. The briquettes made from sodium silicate showed high levels of ash, which can derail some of their uses, such as in the steel industry. The resistance lowest average values obtained in Tumbling test were found in the briquettes agglutinated with pregelatinized starch. However, those briquettes produced with babassu flour, sodium silicate, and tar generated charcoal fines around 40%. These results show low resistance to shock, which could jeopardize its handling, storage, and transportation. |
