Resumo: | Specific studies on the reproductive biology and seed germination of Adenostemma brasilianum are inexistent. Aiming to fill this gap, the objective of this study was to investigate its life history (reproductive phenology and fruit dispersion process), reproductive biology, including tests on the efficiency of two types of materials in isolating the heads from their floral visitors, and visitation frequency. Best seed germination conditions, longevity and physical and physiological quality of the seeds were also verified. The research was carried out from March 2005 to December 2006 in Mata do Paraíso (MP), a seasonal semi-deciduous forest with 195 ha, and Horto Botanico (HB) at the Department of Plant Biology of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV), both sites located in Viçosa (20°45 S and 42°51 W), Minas Gerais. For life history and phenology studies, 50 seedlings were monitored until death, with the following observations being made: presence or absence of floral buds, open flowers diasporas in dispersion, herbivores, and dead individuals; 140 heads were marked in floral buds which were observed daily from the first open flowers until dispersion, characterizing various aspects of flower and head biology, including ASP (pollen secondary presentation mechanism). For the breeding system, the following five tests wee performed: AE-spontaneous self-pollination; AG- agamospermy; AM- manual self-pollination; PC- cross-pollination and PA- open pollination. Except for PA, the heads were isolated with failete bags. The averages were compared by the t test at 0.005% of probability. The tests to verify the efficiency of the two materials (muslin and failete ) were: AE, AG and AM and in each one of them the heads were isolated with muslin and failete and the averages compared by the Qui-square test. Assessment of the floral visitors was performed in both areas and visitation frequency was recorded only in MP, between 07:00 am and 05:00 pm., for 30 minutes every hour during four non-consecutive days, totaling a sampling effort of 20 hours. The visitor contacting the reproductive organs of the flowers was considered a pollinator. For the germination tests, four repetitions with 50 seeds each originated from MP were performed, with the seeds being submitted to different temperatures (20°C, 25°C and 30°C) and light schemes (light supplementation- SUP, environmental light- AMB, continuous darkness- ESC) and daily seed count (27 consecutive days). Longevity was tested by storing seeds at ±20ºC for two, four, six, twelve, and eighteen months, later submitting them to the same analyses described for the newly collected seeds. To characterize their physical quality, the natural population seeds were classified as perfect (with carbonized pericarp and embryo) and imperfect (without hyaline and embryo). Dormancy tests and imbibition s site were developed with tetrazolium and aniline blue, respectively Since A. brasilianum is annual, a seedling bank was formed; 33% of hem died due to strong summer rains and the remaining developed rapidly between November and December/2005, with increased rainfall and temperature. Flowering extended from January to April 2006, with a peak in February. The flowers presented two distinct sexual phases: a male phase, lasting a few hours and a female phase lasting 3±1 days. Anthesis occurs early in the morning, flowers are protandric, and dehiscence of the anthers occurs around 6:00 am, with the start of the ASP process, which extends until approximately 9:00 am, when the female phase initiates. Pollen is abundant, white and of high viability, on an average, 96%. In the heads, the flowers open sequentially in groups on the first two days, with 74% of them being found in anthesis, and after 20 days all the fruit were found exposed to dispersion. Fructification peak was between March and May 2006, followed by the herbivore peak, caused by three phytophagus beetles (Chrysomelidae). A. brasilianum is self-compatible, and with no agamospermy. The results of PC (81.6% fructification) and PA (71.3% in MP and 91.2% in HB) tests demonstrated that pollinators play an important role in its reproduction, although the species has shown to be able of reproducing independently from its services, through spontaneous self-pollination (13.9%). Failete was more efficient in isolating the heads from the pollinators action being fundamental for obtaining reliable reproductive system results. Thirty-eight taxa, belonging to the order Lepidoptera (32 taxa), Hymenoptera (three) and Diptera (three) were collected. The butterflies Ithomiinae (18 species) and Danainae (one species), both Nymphalidae, and the diurnal moths Arctiidae (13 taxa) were the most representative groups in number of species. Among the Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae were the most frequent, especially Brevioleria aelia plisthenes, Episcada carcinia and Pteronymia euritea (Ithomiinae), besides Lycorea halia discreta (Danainae). The inconstant visitation of the lepdoptera was verified and was offset by its species diversity and unpredictable forage behavior, which favor xenogamy and high fructification (>70% in PA). Visitation peak occurred between 8:00 am to 11:00 am. All the Ithomiinae collected were male. As described in the literature, they seek pyrrolidizine alkaloids in the nectar, which makes them unpalatable and are precursor of pheromone biosynthesis; during mating, a part of it is transferred to the females through the spermtophores. The best seed germination condition is 25ºC SUP, with 85.5% rate. Dormancy was independent of the light regime, induced by temperature of 20ºC. Mortality and dormancy break increased with storage time. Seed longevity is short, no longer than 12 months. A head has an average of 31 seeds, 25.3 % of them imperfect, of which around 10% are parthenocarpic. Germination occurred even at low percentages under practically all the conditions tested, with such plasticity being possibly related to the fact of the plant being wild, not yet ´´domesticated´´, which is advantageous for allowing germination under adverse environmental conditions. This study confirmed the existence of a codependence relation between A. brasilianum and its pollinators, although maintenance of both in MP depends on other factors, such as maintaining the habitat of A. brasilianum, its dispersers and feed sources (mainly Solanaceae leaves) for the Ithomiinae juvenile phases. |

Visando preencher esta lacuna, realizou-se a presente pesquisa, cujos objetivos foram conhecer aspéctos da biologia reprodutiva inclindo a história de vida, a eficiência de dois materiais no isolamento dos capítulos, os visitantes florais e as melhores condições para germinação, além da longevidade e a qualidade física e fisiológica das suas sementes, informações fundamentais para facilitar o cultivo e conservação de A. brasilianum. A pesquisa foi realizada em duas áreas no município de Viçosa (20°45 S e 42°51 W), Zona da Mata mineira: Estação de Pesquisa, Treinamento e Educação Ambiental Mata do Paraíso EPETEAMP ou Mata do Paraíso (MP), um fragmento florestal com 195 ha, onde ocorre população natural de A. brasilianum; e Horto Botânico (HB), do Departamento de Biologia Vegetal da UFV, onde indivíduos foram cultivados, a partir de sementes oriundas da MP. O estudo iniciou-se em março de 2005 e se estendeu até dezembro de 2006. Para estudar a história de vida e fenologia, 50 indivíduos foram acompanhados desde plântulas até a morte. Neles observaram-se a presença ou ausência de botões florais, de flores abertas, diásporos em dispersão, herbivoria e indivíduos mortos. Além disso, 140 capítulos em botão floral foram marcados e acompanhados diariamente da antese das primeiras flores até a dispersão dos diásporos; caracterizando-se diversos aspectos da biologia da flor e do capítulo, inclusive o mecanismo de apresentação secundária de pólen (ASP). No estudo de sistema reprodutivo realizaram-se cinco testes na MP e no HB: AE-autopolinização espontânea; AG-agamospermia; AMautopolinização manual; PC-polinização cruzada e PA-Polinização aberta. Exceto em PA, os capítulos foram isolados com failete. As médias foram comparadas pelo teste t (0,005%). Os testes para verificar a eficiência dos materiais, foram: AE, AG e AM em cada um deles e os capítulos foram isolados com musselina e failete; as médias foram comparadas pelo teste Qui-quadrado. Foi realizado o levantamento dos visitantes florais nos indivíduos da MP e do HB. A freqüência de visitação foi verificada em quatro dias não-consecutivos, entre fevereiro e abril de 2006, apenas em indivíduos da MP. As observações foram realizadas das 7:00 às 17:00h, por 30 minutos a cada hora, totalizando um esforço amostral de 20 horas. Para os testes de germinação, utilizou-se sementes coletadas na MP, e germinadas em caixas gerbox sob diferentes temperaturas (20°, 25°C e 30°C) e regimes de luminosidade (suplementação de luz- SUP, luz ambiente- AMB, escuro contínuo- ESC), em quatro repetições com 50 sementes cada. A contagem das plântulas foi diária, durante 27 dias consecutivos. A longevidade foi testada, armazenando-se sementes a ±20ºC, por dois, quatro, seis, doze e dezoito meses, e submetidas às mesmas análises descritas para as recém colhidas. Para caracterizar a qualidade física das sementes da população natural, elas foram classificadas nas categorias: perfeitas (com pericarpo carbonizado e embrião) e imperfeitas (sem embrião e hialinas). Os testes de dormência e local de embebição foram realizados com tetrazólio e azul de anilina, respectivamente. A. brasilianum é anual e formou banco de plântulas e 44% delas morreram com as fortes chuvas de verão; as remanescentes se desenvolveram rapidamente de novembro à dezembro/2005, coincidindo com o aumento da precipitação e temperatura. A floração estendeu de janeiro a abril de 2006, com pico em fevereiro. As flores apresentaram duas fases sexuais: a masculina, que dura algumas horas, e a feminina, que dura 3±1 dias. A antese é matutina, as flores são protândricas, a deiscência das anteras ocorre cerca de 6:00h, quando inicia o processo de ASP, este se estende até cerca de 9:00h, com o início da fase feminina. O pólen é abundante, branco e apresentou viabilidade média de 96%. Nos capítulos, as flores se abrem em grupos e seqüencialmente. Nos dois primeiros dias, 74% delas encontravam-se em antese, e após 20 dias todos os diásporos encontravam-se maduros e expostos à dispersão. O pico de frutificação deu-se em março, em maio/2006 ocorreu o pico de herbivoria, causado por três besouros fitófagos (Chrysomelidae). A. brasilianum é autocompatível e não é agamospérmica. Os resultados dos testes de PC (81,6% de frutificação) e PA (71,3% na MP e 91,2% no HB) demonstram que os polinizadores exercem importante papel na sua reprodução, embora a espécie tenha se mostrado capaz de reproduzir independentemente dos seus serviços, através da autopolinização espontânea (13,9%). O failete foi mais eficiente para isolar os capítulos da ação dos polinizadores, foi, também, fundamental para a obtenção de resultados confiáveis sobre o sistema reprodutivo. Foram coletados 38 táxons de visitantes florais, pertencentes às ordens Lepidoptera (32 táxons), Hymenoptera (três) e Diptera (três). As borboletas Ithomiinae (18 espécies) e Danainae (uma espécie), ambas Nymphalidae, e as mariposas diurnas Arctiidae (13 táxons) foram os grupos mais representativos em número de espécies. Dentre os lepidópteros, a maior freqüência foi das Nymphalidae, especialmente, Brevioleria aelia plisthenes, Episcada carcinia e Pteronymia euritea (Ithomiinae), além de Lycorea halia discreta (Danainae). A inconstância de visitação dos lepidópteros parece ser recompensada pela diversidade de espécies e o seu comportamento de forrageio imprevisível, que favorecem a xenogamia e a alta frutificação natural. O pico de visitação ocorreu entre 8:00 e 11:00 h. Todos os Ithomiinae coletados são machos. Conforme descrito na literatura, eles buscam alcalóides pirrolidizínicos no néctar, que os tornam impalatáveis e são precursores na biossíntese de feromônios; durante a cópula, parte do alcalóide é transferido para as fêmeas. A melhor condição para germinação das sementes é 25ºC SUP com 85,5% de germinação. A dormência, independente do regime de luminosidade, é induzida pela temperatura de 20ºC. A mortalidade e a quebra de dormência aumentaram com o tempo de armazenamento, a longevidade das sementes é curta, se comparada a outras Asteraceae herbáceas, não ultrapassa 12 meses. Um capítulo possui em média 31 sementes, 25,3% delas imperfeitas, das quais cerca de 10% são partenocárpicas. Houve germinação mesmo que em baixas porcentagens em praticamente todas as condições testadas. Tal plasticidade pode estar relacionada ao fato de a planta ser silvestre, ainda não domesticada , característica vantajosa, visto que possibilita a germinação mesmo quando sob condições ambientais adversas. O presente estudo confirmou a possível existência de uma relação de co- dependência entre A. brasilianum e seus polinizadores. Specific studies on the reproductive biology and seed germination of Adenostemma brasilianum are inexistent. Aiming to fill this gap, the objective of this study was to investigate its life history (reproductive phenology and fruit dispersion process), reproductive biology, including tests on the efficiency of two types of materials in isolating the heads from their floral visitors, and visitation frequency. Best seed germination conditions, longevity and physical and physiological quality of the seeds were also verified. The research was carried out from March 2005 to December 2006 in Mata do Paraíso (MP), a seasonal semi-deciduous forest with 195 ha, and Horto Botanico (HB) at the Department of Plant Biology of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV), both sites located in Viçosa (20°45 S and 42°51 W), Minas Gerais. For life history and phenology studies, 50 seedlings were monitored until death, with the following observations being made: presence or absence of floral buds, open flowers diasporas in dispersion, herbivores, and dead individuals; 140 heads were marked in floral buds which were observed daily from the first open flowers until dispersion, characterizing various aspects of flower and head biology, including ASP (pollen secondary presentation mechanism). For the breeding system, the following five tests wee performed: AE-spontaneous self-pollination; AG- agamospermy; AM- manual self-pollination; PC- cross-pollination and PA- open pollination. Except for PA, the heads were isolated with failete bags. The averages were compared by the t test at 0.005% of probability. The tests to verify the efficiency of the two materials (muslin and failete ) were: AE, AG and AM and in each one of them the heads were isolated with muslin and failete and the averages compared by the Qui-square test. Assessment of the floral visitors was performed in both areas and visitation frequency was recorded only in MP, between 07:00 am and 05:00 pm., for 30 minutes every hour during four non-consecutive days, totaling a sampling effort of 20 hours. The visitor contacting the reproductive organs of the flowers was considered a pollinator. For the germination tests, four repetitions with 50 seeds each originated from MP were performed, with the seeds being submitted to different temperatures (20°C, 25°C and 30°C) and light schemes (light supplementation- SUP, environmental light- AMB, continuous darkness- ESC) and daily seed count (27 consecutive days). Longevity was tested by storing seeds at ±20ºC for two, four, six, twelve, and eighteen months, later submitting them to the same analyses described for the newly collected seeds. To characterize their physical quality, the natural population seeds were classified as perfect (with carbonized pericarp and embryo) and imperfect (without hyaline and embryo). Dormancy tests and imbibition s site were developed with tetrazolium and aniline blue, respectively Since A. brasilianum is annual, a seedling bank was formed; 33% of hem died due to strong summer rains and the remaining developed rapidly between November and December/2005, with increased rainfall and temperature. Flowering extended from January to April 2006, with a peak in February. The flowers presented two distinct sexual phases: a male phase, lasting a few hours and a female phase lasting 3±1 days. Anthesis occurs early in the morning, flowers are protandric, and dehiscence of the anthers occurs around 6:00 am, with the start of the ASP process, which extends until approximately 9:00 am, when the female phase initiates. Pollen is abundant, white and of high viability, on an average, 96%. In the heads, the flowers open sequentially in groups on the first two days, with 74% of them being found in anthesis, and after 20 days all the fruit were found exposed to dispersion. Fructification peak was between March and May 2006, followed by the herbivore peak, caused by three phytophagus beetles (Chrysomelidae). A. brasilianum is self-compatible, and with no agamospermy. The results of PC (81.6% fructification) and PA (71.3% in MP and 91.2% in HB) tests demonstrated that pollinators play an important role in its reproduction, although the species has shown to be able of reproducing independently from its services, through spontaneous self-pollination (13.9%). Failete was more efficient in isolating the heads from the pollinators action being fundamental for obtaining reliable reproductive system results. Thirty-eight taxa, belonging to the order Lepidoptera (32 taxa), Hymenoptera (three) and Diptera (three) were collected. The butterflies Ithomiinae (18 species) and Danainae (one species), both Nymphalidae, and the diurnal moths Arctiidae (13 taxa) were the most representative groups in number of species. Among the Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae were the most frequent, especially Brevioleria aelia plisthenes, Episcada carcinia and Pteronymia euritea (Ithomiinae), besides Lycorea halia discreta (Danainae). The inconstant visitation of the lepdoptera was verified and was offset by its species diversity and unpredictable forage behavior, which favor xenogamy and high fructification (>70% in PA). Visitation peak occurred between 8:00 am to 11:00 am. All the Ithomiinae collected were male. As described in the literature, they seek pyrrolidizine alkaloids in the nectar, which makes them unpalatable and are precursor of pheromone biosynthesis; during mating, a part of it is transferred to the females through the spermtophores. The best seed germination condition is 25ºC SUP, with 85.5% rate. Dormancy was independent of the light regime, induced by temperature of 20ºC. Mortality and dormancy break increased with storage time. Seed longevity is short, no longer than 12 months. A head has an average of 31 seeds, 25.3 % of them imperfect, of which around 10% are parthenocarpic. Germination occurred even at low percentages under practically all the conditions tested, with such plasticity being possibly related to the fact of the plant being wild, not yet ´´domesticated´´, which is advantageous for allowing germination under adverse environmental conditions. This study confirmed the existence of a codependence relation between A. brasilianum and its pollinators, although maintenance of both in MP depends on other factors, such as maintaining the habitat of A. brasilianum, its dispersers and feed sources (mainly Solanaceae leaves) for the Ithomiinae juvenile phases. |
