The activities of the Dairy Cattle Farming Development Program in the region of Viçosa city (Programa de Desenvolvimento da Pecuária Leiteira, PDPL-RV) were started in 1988, as a partnership between Nestlé/DPA/UFV/Funarbe, aiming to qualify students and provide technical and management assistance to the milk farmers in the region of Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The objective of this study was to conduct a historical and evolutionary analysis of PDPL-RV. The study was divided in three stages: in the first, the history of the program was researched, with data collection based on the reports of annual activities, program bulletins and structured interviews; in the second stage, the qualification of the participating students was analyzed through questionnaires with questions including aspects relative to the apprenticeship, the quality of the technical guidance received and the placement in the labor market. In this stage, questionnaires were also applied to the companies hiring former interns and the assisted farmers aiming to know their current perspective of the program. In the third stage, technical and economic indicators of the two milk-production systems assisted by the Program were evaluated. The technical and economical data of the evaluated properties were collected monthly from May 1988 to April 2012, by descriptive analysis of the productive characteristics and technical and economical indices, as well as of the annual growth rates of the indicators. From the onset of the program until the end of 2012, 1,080 conclusion certificates were issued to interns. Of the 94 former interns that answered the questionnaire, 72 entered the labor market after conclusion of the course. For 82% of these professionals, the technical knowledge acquired in the internship was optimal; for 88%, the contribution of PDPL-RV to the professional development was optimal, and for 82%, the responsibilities demanded are coherent with the labor market. For the companies that hire former interns, these professionals are better suited due to their everyday experience with the farmer and their capacity to handle people and responsibilities. The program has significantly contributed to the development of dairy cattle farming in the region of Viçosa, allowing an increase in productivity and milk yield for the assisted properties. On Água Limpa Farm, milk yield had an annual growth of 15% in the period from 1988 to 2012, increasing from 6,984.64 to 180,544 L per year. Production per lactating cow progressed from 2.4 to 10.5 L, which represents an annual increase of 6.7%. In addition, productivity per unit area for livestock grew 10.8% per year, from 324.8 to 3,467.9 L/ha year. The gross income of the dairy activity grew 10% per year, increasing from R$ 19,895.61 to R$ 186,589.80. On Nô da Silva Farm, the annual milk yield increased by 10% per year, rising from 152.186 to 1,495.038 L/year. Production per lactating cow evolved from 5.9 to 28.5 L, an annual growth of 7%; productivity per unit area increased by 9.7% per year, going from 1,845 to 15,567 L/ha year; and the gross income of the dairy activity increased from R$ 268,520.52 to R$ 1,500,621.17 per year, with an increase of 7.8% per year. The Dairy Cattle Farming Development Program in the region of Viçosa city has managed to achieve its goals over the 24 years, with important results for both the professional qualification of interns and the development of dairy cattle farming in the region.
