Resumo: The present study aimed to evaluate the performance of a hybrid anaerobic reactor (HAR), which combines the technologies of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) and an anaerobic filter (AF) in the treatment of swine wastewater. The reactor was fabricated using as structure a tank of high density polyethylene (HDPE) with the cylindrical shape of 2.38 m-diameter and 2.43 m-height, with a total capacity of 10 m³. Inside the tank, structural adjustments were made to accommodate the upper support material, consisting of cubes of polyurethane foam with porosity close to 0.93 m3 m-3 occupying a total volume of 3 m³. The system operated under three conditions of utile average organic loading rate (uOLR), 0.88, 1.35 and 2.62 kg m-3d -1, measured as COD. The operation of the HAR lasted 250 days and the average removal efficiency of total COD applied to the three uOLR were 42, 72 and 73%, for filtered COD, 67, 81 and 82%, and of BOD for the last uORL parts applied 75 and 78% respectively. Removal of total solids (TS) was 31, 60 and 58%, total volatile solids (TVS) was 20, 62 and 61% and volatile suspend solid (VSS) was 17, 55 and 62% respectively. At the end of the last two phases evaluated the COD removal profile along the reactor to obtain kinetic coefficients of apparent degradation of organic matter, where the kinetic model of first order was the best fit to the data obtained. The coefficients of deccay (k) for the first order kinetic model were estimated as 0.041 and 0.077 h-1 for respective values of uOLR. At the end of phase II and III of the experiment were sampled material support to characterize the biomass attached through microscopic examinations, distinguishing the main cellular morphologies present in the biofilm. Even occasionally subjected to fluctuations in temperature of the liquid and hydraulic and organic loading, the hybrid anaerobic reactor used in this study remained stable made up balanced on the efficiency of COD removal and maintenance of effluent pH above 6.5, confirming its stability. The increase in uOLR and applied flow did not affect the ability of the reactor in the removal of organic material present, with no significant difference between the last two stages of the operating system and can be considered as satisfactory in removing organic load.
