The changes in the mental health field in Brazil that have occurred through the search for the extinction of asylums and the creation of new more humane services, seeking to stimulate social and family relationships of patients with mental disorders while respecting their particularities, like the Psychosocial Attention Centers (CAPS), allowed families to live daily with their sick relative. This proximity has made it so that the family includes in their daily life the care of the mentally ill (PTM) and, therefore, it becomes necessary to manage their time to achieve a balance in the family system and thus improve their quality of life. These changes that have occurred in the field of mental health and rehabilitation of mental patients in the family gave raise to the study s objectives, which are: to characterize the socioeconomic and demographic profile, personal and family lives of CAPS users and their care takers, to identify and analyze the changes faced by the family after the reinstatement of the PTM to the residence, as well as their strategies to resume caring for them, and examining the time administration of the family of the PTM, as a function of the care he expended, and to analyze the perception of the family about the changes in family time management influenced by the CAPS, as well as the influence of service in their quality of life. The survey was conducted in a qualitative approach, exploratory and descriptive, having adopted the case study as a methodological approach. The techniques of data collection were document analysis, questionnaires and interviews based on a semistructured script, which were applied to 11 family caregivers of mental patients treated between April and June 2009 in CAPS. It was found that the onset of mental disorder has led to changes in the organization and dynamics of families, which reorganize themselves to accommodate the care taking demands, having to leave their daily activities, often without the necessary knowledge to make decisions for the required care. It was found that the administration of family time was directly influenced by the health status of the PTMs which, when more independent, allowed more independence for the family in carrying out other activities. CAPS was perceived by families as a local aid, emotional and economic support, and was favored in time management and the improvement in the quality of life. Thus, it can be concluded that the institutional environment, created in the mold of the Psychiatric Reform, which has the family as a partner in the care process guided by personal obligation, affection and reciprocity, has allowed better organization of time with positive effects on the quality of life.
