The study presents the proposition about the role of rural extensionist as an agent of rural development, from 2003, when the Brazilian Federal Government, through the Ministry of Agrarian Development, introduced with of the publication of the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension National Policy a number of parameters that seek reorder this service, with emphasis on the use of methodologies that sights the importance of traditional knowledge in terms of construction an appropriate knowledge for a sustainable management of resources. In Transamazonian in recent decades this service has gone through crises. However, after the PNATER has been occurring actions that point to the resolution of this crisis. Thus, from the experience of governmental institutions from ATER of the Itaituba trying to understand the process in which the PNATER is being implemented in order to view the opportunities and difficulties involved in them. With this we tried to formulate alternatives from which actions or priorities can be redefined. The actual situation of the ATER in Transamazonian currently is still within a complex process, where despite the speeches point to new directions and solutions, operates within a situation quite frail. Aggravates the precarious training of academic of technicians, the dichotomy economic versus social, which does not provide the tools that have been required. The main findings of the study are that in order to strengthen the process of resolving this crisis is important deepen the theoretical and practical knowledge of the technicians. Another alternative would be to create a forum for exchange of experience between the actors and dissemination of successful experiences. Adding the experiences of NGOs and their own groups of producers who have sought work within the prospect of a new rural extension.
