Resumo: The tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta is an important pest of Solanum lycopersicum. In the search for improved varieties are resistant to this insect. One technique that helps in the choice of parents is to diallel. The diallel allows the estimation of general ability (GCA) and specific combining (CEC). So the goal was inferred from work on the combining ability of subsamples of tomato for resistance to T. absolute as well as identifying superior hybrid combinations and the resistance mechanisms involved. The parents were divided into two contrasting groups in terms of resistance to T. absoluta. We evaluated the adaxial and abaxial eggs, weight of male and female pupae, larvae and pupae mortality, oviposition in 'Santa Clara', sex ratio, fecundity, net reproductive rate, number of eggs/female pattern deposited on the cultivar 'Santa Clara 'non-glandular and glandular trichomes on the abaxial and adaxial zingiberene and content. Estimates of GCA and SCA of hybrids, combinations HGB 2119 x LA 716, HGB 2119 x PI 12786, HGB 2214 x HGB 674, HGB 2064 x HGB 674, HGB 2214 x PI 127826, HGB 985 x LA 716 e Santa Clara x HGB 674 have high potential in the genetic improvement of tomato with the aim of resistance to T. absoluta, and the resistance mechanisms involved were antixenosis and antibiosis.

No melhoramento se busca por variedades resistentes a esse inseto. Uma técnica que auxilia na escolha de progenitores é a de cruzamentos dialélicos. Os cruzamentos dialélicos permitem a estimação da capacidade geral (CGC) e específica de combinação (CEC). Assim o objetivo desde trabalho foi inferir sobre a capacidade combinatória de subamostras de tomateiro quanto à resistência a T. absoluta, bem como identificar possíveis combinações híbridas superiores e os mecanismos de resistência envolvidos. Os genitores foram divididos em dois grupos contrastantes em relação à resistência a T. absoluta. As características avaliadas foram ovos face adaxial e abaxial, peso de pupas macho e fêmea, mortalidade lagartas e pupas, oviposição em Santa Clara‟, razão sexual, fecundidade, taxa líquida reprodutiva, número de ovos/fêmea depositados na cultivar padrão "Santa Clara", tricomas glandular e não glandular na face abaxial e adaxial e teor de zingibereno. As estimativas de CGC e CEC destes híbridos avaliados, as combinações BGH 2119 x LA 716, BGH 2119 x PI 12786, BGH 2214 x BGH 674, BGH 2064 x BGH 674, BGH 2214 x PI 127826, BGH 985 x LA 716 e Santa Clara x BGH 674 têm alto potencial no melhoramento genético do tomateiro visando a resistência a T. absoluta.
