Resumo: Current figures show that the flower market is in franc expansion in Brazil and throughout the world, and shows promising for the coming years. Tropical floriculture is adequate as an alternative or auxiliary crop for small-scale producers. Studies about these plants, however, are scarce. The lack of information is perceived in almost every stage of their production, including propagation material, fertilisation and cultivation in general. Heliconia psittacorum L.f., the species featured in this research, shows ample distribution through all of the Brazilian territory, presenting a musaceous growth habit, rhizomes of the sympodial type and erect inflorescences with bracts distributed in a single plane. Flowering occurs during the whole year. This work had as objectives: studying aspects of the cultivation of Heliconia psittacorum L.f. From the selection and preparation of propagation material for obtaining plantlets, to the identification of difficulties and particularities of the culture, in its initial phase of cultivation like: propagation material, substrates and fertilisation, as well as raising data to produce a technical information bulletin for the culture, showing its particularities, but highlighting the simplicity of its cultivation. Four experiments were done, three of them related to propagation material and one to establishing equations for leaf area calculation. For the work with propagation material, the following studies were developed: a study on the classification of rhizomes for commercialisation, another one on the production of propagation material under different organic and mineral fertilisations, and a third on mixtures of substrates for obtaining plantlets with the adequate standard for definitive planting in the field. Results related to propagation show that the best pseudostem diameter for commercial plantlets is 10,01 to 12 mm, classified as Group C. Using non-composted organic materials, when available at the property, is a strategy that can be used by producers for the cultivation of propagation material, while organic and mineral combinations showed more adequate for the production of plantlets. The best plantlet development among substrate mixtures happened with the usage of carbonised sugar-cane bagasse and vermiculite (1:1). As a mineral component in all the mixtures tested, vermiculite presented results better than sand.
