Resumo: One of the most important social changes that have occurred in society in recent years is related to the increase of the elderly population. With greater life longevity and increase in their purchasing power, the elderly have become increasingly frequent consumers, in addition to giving more importance to the quality of goods and services. However, the consumption of goods and services by the elderly in different family arrangements in Brazil is still little known. Thus, the choice to do a research that makes a relationship between family arrangements and consumption is made by the need to better understand the social transformations through which the contemporary Brazilian society is undergoing at the moment. Therefore this study compared, by using microdata from the Household Budget Survey (Pesquisa de Orçamentos Familiares - POF 2008/2009), the consumption of goods and services by the elderly who lived alone and those living with a spouse, from socioeconomic and geographic variables. The study was a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional and used microdata from POF (2008-2009) carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Living arrangements of elderly that were single-person households or those residing with the spouse in all regions of the country were universe of analysis. Data were extracted using the STATA software and statistically analyzed using the SPSS. Results show that the majority of the elderly were "young", i.e., they were at 60-69 years old, white, lived in urban areas of the country, had elementary school degree, and the minority, was in the AB income range , which is derived mostly from transfers. Most elderly from the single-person arrangement lived in the northeast, and those living with the spouse lived in the southeast. The residing with the spouse family arrangement spent more than the singleperson in relation to items of housing expenses, miscellaneous expenses, leisure, transportation, food within the household, tobacco, personal care items, health care and clothing. It should be highlighted that within these selected expense items, the highest expenses of the assessed family arrangements were housing items, food within the household and health care. In both family arrangements, those who resided in the southern region were those with higher expenses in relation to expenditure categories analyzed, particularly when compared to residents in the Northeast. Despite these household set in such family arrangements are a minority belonging to the AB income group, they were responsible for the higher expenses with the analyzed expenditure items. Therefore, it is concluded that the total household income was the factor that had the greatest influence on the consumption of goods and services among family arrangements, since the elderly have greater purchasing power as their income improves, and investing more and more in their health and welfare. Thus, it is known that as the population gets older, the needs of the elder consumers becomes more influential, although the society is not yet completely prepared to meet the needs of this segment. Therefore, understanding consumer relationships of this segment is extremely important, so that the offered goods and services provide satisfaction and improved quality of life for the elderly people.
