Resumo: The greater difficulty tillage performed under organic management faces is weed control. More efficient weed management can be achieved with the knowledge of how its change over time. Weed population changes according to management. The use of cover crops in tillage organic system modifies the weed dynamics. The aim of this work was to study the effect of cover crops on weeds and corn yield in tillage organic system. The experimental design was a randomized block factorial (5 x 2) scheme with 4 replicates, comprising 40 experimental units. The treatments were composed of five types of cover: recommended bulk-seeded, UFV bulk, oat, sunflower and witness; and two cropping systems (single and maize intercropped with pig bean). The bulk system were a mix of seven crops: oat, maize, sorghum, sunflower, soybean, pigeon pea and pig bean, differing only in the amount of seed used. Phytosociological analysis of weed and similarity was held at V2, V5 and R1 stage of corn. It was also evaluated plant height, height of insertion of cob, stalk diameter, grain weight and grain yield of maize. The dry mass production of the crop with UFV bulk and recommended bulk were superior. The nutsedge showed higher relative importance in all treatments. The cover crops provided reduction in dry weight of weeds in all periods. The oat and UFV bulk were effective in reducing the number of weeds and dry weight of weeds in the evaluated periods. The sunflower cover showed similarity to the witness one. UFV bulk coverage and oat showed the highest value of corn yield. The intercropping system showed better performance for grain weight and yield. Thus the toppings consisting of oat and the UFV bulk are alternatives in suppressing weeds and favor of corn yield in tillage organic system.
