Espermiogênese e morfologia dos espermatozoides em Lagria villosa com inferências taxonômicas (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae: Lagriinae)

Tenebrionidae, with more than 19,000 species, is one of the most specious families of Coleoptera, which has made it difficult to establish a consensual hypothesis about its systematics. The tenebrionids have been divided into branches Tenebrionoide and Lagrioide. The latter contains the lagriids, which initially were considered a family, Lagriidae, but later works had placed them within Tenebrionidae as the subfamily Lagriinae. In this paper, we describe the morphological characteristics of the reproductive system, spermatogenesis and sperm of the lagriid, Lagria villosa, since this type of character has contributed to systematic several groups of insects, including beetles. In this specie, each testis is formed by approximately 60 follicles and the cyst up to 1,200 spermatozoa. At the end of spermatogenesis, the spermatozoa are arranged antiparallely in the bundles, characteristic observed only in others tenebrionids. In the spermatozoa, the head region is formed by an acrosome with three layers, and a nucleus of highly compact chromatin. The flagellum is symmetrical and consists of the axoneme of 9 + 9 + 2 microtubules, two mitochondrial derivatives and two accessory bodies. Some features described here support those work that rank lagríideos in a subfamily (Lagriinae) of Tenebrionidae (e.g. the antiparallel arrangement of the sperm bundles), others support the division of tenebrionids in the branches Lagrioide and Tenebrionoide (e.g. the number of follicles per testis and sperm in the bundles).
